    2. may I have a screenshot of a 410 page please or is this generated by search engine?
    3. am i correct: a 301 redirect plugin will not work on a redundant theme? its ancient

  • Hi Gaye,

I can see we’ve already answered a bunch of your questions as https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/404-or-410-after-i-delete-my-wp-site/.

Could you confirm the address of the site you’re trying to delete? It would help us to understand what exactly are you planning to do.

    Hi Fresatomica thankyou.
    the old site is: https://gayechapman.wordpress.com/

My question has changed a bit please:
My goal is to stop the link appearing in Google SERPs asap. To make it ‘invisible’.
    So question now is:
    1. If I made the site Private would its link disappear from Google Serps or would the viewer still see it but just get a This Site is Private page when they click on it?
    2. If I then went ahead and deleted the site raising a 410 page would that effectively cancel out the Private setting so the site would reappear until it is crawled as a 410? (possibly months for an old innactive site)
    3. the same thinking applies to a 310 redirect, if a redundant site can even take the plugin, once I delete the site raising a 410 page that will overide the 310?!

    Regards Gaye

  • Hi Gaye,

My goal is to stop the link appearing in Google SERPs asap. To make it ‘invisible’.

To do this, first verify the site with Google Search Console if it’s not verified already:

    https://wordpress.com/support/site-verification-services/

Then set the site to private, and then request Google directly to remove it from their search results:

    https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/9689846?hl=en&visit_id=637758421327019624-3198141292&rd=1

If you simply delete the site it will also be removed from search results, but it won’t be immediate. See below:

    1. If I made the site Private would its link disappear from Google Serps or would the viewer still see it but just get a This Site is Private page when they click on it?

The link would disappear from search results eventually, but this can take weeks or even months. But should a link come up in a search result, anyone clicking it will simply see a page saying the site is private. The same thing would happen if you deleted the site instead, except that in that case someone would get a page saying the site has been deleted, rather than one saying the site is private.

    2. If I then went ahead and deleted the site raising a 410 page would that effectively cancel out the Private setting so the site would reappear until it is crawled as a 410? (possibly months for an old innactive site)

If the site is already removed form search engine results, deleting it won’t make any difference.

If your site stops appearing in search results, it means Google (and others) have removed your site from their indexes at that point. For you site to start appearing in search results again, it would first need to be re-indexed, and the only way that can happen is if you set the site back to public for a few months prior to deleting it.

    3. the same thinking applies to a 310 redirect, if a redundant site can even take the plugin, once I delete the site raising a 410 page that will overide the 310?!

I’m not sure what plugin you’re referring to, but we only offer 301 redirects on WordPress.com via our Site Redirect upgrade:

    https://wordpress.com/support/site-redirect/

That said, same as I explained under 2 above, once the site has been removed from search engine indexes, the only way it can appear in search results again is if it were first re-indexed, which would require disabling the redirect and setting the site to public for a month or two at minimum.
