[request] Sphere Widget for WordPress.com
-
Even since I found out about Sphere and all of its benefits through you guys, I just had to try it out. But when I tried to request their widget for my blogs, they tell me they are unable to do that due to the massive flooding of request that poured in. The only thing that’s available for wordpress is their sphere related content plugin that only works with wordpress.org and I don’t know how to use wordpress.org just yet. So, my request is that I would like to see you all have a Sphere Related Content widget in our WordPress widget pages so we can enjoy Sphere’s benefits, including me so I am able to use the sphere widget and enjoy all its benefits.
-
What are the potential benefits to which you refer? If you can list the possible benefits of a having a Sphere widget for wordpress.com blogs then perhaps other bloggers will support your request too.
-
Here’s their site.
And their About page
What they do is help you find content that related to the subjects you guys have on your blogs.
There is also a special button you can put on your browsers that will have you blog be a part of their site and show off other blog links with subjects that’s related to the subjects you have.
You should also check out their blog too.

I would love to have the widget.
There is a Sphere blog here at WordPress.com :)
http://sphere.wordpress.com/This is from their official site.
Sphere Related Content Widget
The Sphere Related Content Widget connects with an icon link at the end of your blog posts. When a reader clicks on the icon link, we find blog and media articles related to your blog posts. See it in action on over 1 billion article pages on popular blogs and media sites like the New York Times and GigaOm. The Sphere Related Content plug-in works best on topics that are being actively discussed in the blogosphere and news media.
http://www.sphere.com/toolsI tried to join and received the same message about a month ago. My posts are being documented there though.
I have just added Sphere plugin to Firefox. It can be found on the page linked above. It only took a sec.

If you wish to realize your dreams then, staff advise that the way to go is to send in a feedback mentioning the reasons you want this feature.
-
Sphere uses javascripting. I believe that this will never happen. I would love to have it, so far I’m sceptic about wordpress.com implementing.
-
I have found several web sites that use Sphere. I found the idea that I could find other content related to the content I was currently reading was a powerful. Here’s a tool that allows me to find and discover new sites related to my interest. Please make this available.
-
-
If you want it, you need to send feedback to staff (through your dashboard) with the reasons why you want it.
-
I think WP staff is already thoroughly aware of all this. WordPress Matt M. is a big-time mover and shaker (and money maker?) in Sphere and its recent developments.
-
So that means that in the penultimate hour on Friday night a sphere widget will suddenly materializ. Then we can spend the weekend beta testing it, right? Just joshing … lol ;)

Partial text of e-mail received from Tony Conrad of Sphere
We should not have sent this email to WordPress.com bloggers – that was a mistake. While we’re huge fans of WordPress.com (our blog sphere.wordpress.com runs on WordPress.com), unfortunately FeedBurner’s FeedFlare does not work on the platform. We were aware of this but mistakenly included WordPress.com bloggers on our email list. Our mistake.
We hope to make Sphere Related Content available for WordPress.com bloggers in the future but it requires some template coordination with Automattic (WordPress.com).
Please Sphere us WordPress. :)

Here’s the long and short of it FeedBurner’s FeedFlare does not work on the wp-MU blogging platform so what’s needed is a custom made widget.

Thanks Velvethammer for posting our note. We did make a error in sending out the initial FeedFlare invite – my mistake.
I also want to say thanks to all of you who have voiced your interest in our plug-in. That’s very flattering for a start-up. We’re truly big fans of WordPress.com, Matt and Toni and feel very fortunate to participate in this incredibly unique community.

Bloody hell….
Next person who posts a ‘me too’ post without stating that they’ve sent in a feedback 1) is just wasting their time and 2) owes the entire wp.com community a steak dinner. :)
Not trying to be negative but we’ve noted above that the correct method for casting your vote for this feature is via sending in a feedback. By only posting here, your thoughts on the issue are probably not heard and you just pull time away from the forum volenteers who have to reply to you pointing you in the right direction. We’d rather spend out time trying to help folks who really need our help.
Actually READING the thread that you post and following through with the suggestions made up above shows intellegence as well and demonstrates that you are an intellegent and thoughtful blogger, a plus in the blogging community. :)
As to the javascript issue, we have widgets that use javascript already. (ie The flickr widget) It’s user inputted javascript that’s removed as a security risk. Dropping details into a javascript has been done before.
I like Sphere too and would like to see it in here. I’ve sent in a feedback though. :)
