Require approval to comment, but not read?
-
Is there a way in WordPress that allows everyone to *read* the blog, but only *approved* people can post comments on it? A “private” blog, from what I understand, is visible only to its members. I’d like to be able to move my blog from Blogger and set it up so that everyone can read it, but only folks that are approved members (i.e. who we approve, as opposed to merely being registered with WordPress) can post comments.
Any ideas??

I think the only way you can achieve this is by setting your comments to
“Allow people to post comments on the article”
E-mail me whenever:
* Anyone posts a comment
* A comment is held for moderationBefore a comment appears:
* An administrator must always approve the comment
* Comment author must fill out name and e-mail
* Comment author must have a previously approved commentI could be wrong but I believe that using the ” comment author must have a previously approved comment” and being vigilant about approving only the comments of those selected few that you choose to post comments from may accomplish what you want.

Thanks…I don’t want to have to “moderate” the comments, but I understand your approach, and that is better than anything that I’ve come up with so far!
Could well be that what I want to do ain’t possible. I’m an utter noob at this. :(
I subscribe to “forums” where everyone can read them but one has to register to post, but maybe that’s entirely different than how blogs work.

Yes forums have differnt options than blogs do. Your only choices are found here => Dashboard => Options => Discussion
Also if you don’t moderate comments and leave comments wide open to anyone in sundry then any troll or spammer can leave their stuff and have it instantly posted to your blog. -
Timethief,
Yeah, I’m finding that out the hard way. But I don’t have time to moderate comments, hence my “approval” idea for posters. But, you’ve given me a way to start to chip away at it. Thanks.

You could do it if you had the regular wordpress software with the Dashboard -> Options -> General -> “Users must be registered and logged in to comment” feature turned on. All that does on the WPMu platform is just require them to have a wp.com account.

Well, shoot! I’m looking for the same feature; public blog with member only comments. Don’t want to start a forum. Drats!

-> Options -> General Options
Membership: ____ Users must be registered and logged in to comment -
Hmmm, Thank you! I think what I’m hoping for is that only members can post AND read comments. Is that possible?

It sounds like you need either private blog or a forum. Unlimited Private Users – Add as many users to your private blog as you like. This upgrade removes the 35 user limit on private blogs. http://wordpress.com/blog/2006/10/27/unlimited-users-on-private-blogs/
