Rescheduled posts not sent to email subscribers

I’m rescheduling posts (already published) to publish this year. I’ve just found out the rescheduled posts are not being sent to my email subscribers. How can I fix this?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there. Did you simply change the date of the posts, or did you set the posts back to draft before republishing them? Merely changing the date won’t send out notifications, but republishing might.

Keep in mind that republishing/rescheduling old posts can cause links from other sites to your posts to stop working, as the post will no longer be hosted at the old link which includes the original publication date. This can mess up your search rankings and cause a lot of frustration to your readers. A better practice is to publish a new post, linking to the old one. You can even include an extract to the old post with the link.

You can actually do this in one click by reblogging your old posts, but personally I prefer to link to older posts manually when I’m trying to give an old post new attention.

    Hello. Thanks for responding.

    Q. “Did you simply change the date of the posts, or did you set the posts back to draft before republishing them?”
    A. Some time after they were published, I scheduled them to be released at another date. I year later in fact. Its a yearly series. I’m rescheduling half of last years posts this year – intentionally.

“Keep in mind that republishing/rescheduling old posts can cause links from other sites to your posts to stop working, as the post will no longer be hosted at the old link which includes the original publication date.”
Yeah, I know of this. This is acceptable. I don’t want to link to the old post.

So the question remains. How can I reschedule these posts and ensure they are sent to my email subscribers?

  • As I tried to point out with the first question, rescheduling, i.e. merely changing the publication date, won’t send out notifications. You need to completely set the post back to draft and update the post, so that it’s completely removed from the front end of the blog. Then you change the date and republish it.

However, I’m not sure if that will send out notifications either: the Publicize feature that publishes posts on Facebook and Twitter, for example, only triggers the first time you publish a post. No amount of republishing or rescheduling will make it post to social media again. Email notifications might work the same way, but I don’t know.

If you republish in the way I explained above and the notifications don’t go out, then email notifications work the same and there’s no way to trigger them a second time with the same post. In that case you’ll need to create a new post and copy the content from the old post into the new one and publish it. If you use the classic editor (WP-Admin dashboard ->Posts ->Add New) you can use the Writing Helper module to copy any existing post with one click: https://en.support.wordpress.com/writing-helper/copy-a-post/

Thanks for your help and patience Kokkieh. Much appreciated.

When I’ve been rescheduling the posts, the blog website, fb and google+ do receive the posts. I’ve checked. The only exception is the email subscriptions.

So for example, with this post
    http://thescripturesays.org/2015/06/12/job-38-39-the-lord-answered-job-out-of-the-whirlwind/
I left the changed scheduled date.
I changed the status to draft and updated.
I saved it as a draft then clicked on reschedule.
    my blog website has it.
my fb page has it. my tumblr acc has it, (coming from a dlvr it redirection)
google+ doesnt have it and the email subscriptions dont either.

    Yes it seems wordpress specific.

  • Based on what you say it seems there’s no way to trigger a second email notification on a post. I suspected this might be the case, but I wasn’t sure. This isn’t a bug, though – it’s how it was designed, so bringing staff in on this won’t really help.

In that case, the only way to have a new notification go out is to create a new post entirely and copy the old post’s content into it, as I explained above.
