how can a blog domain be reserved, and are there a time limit on a reserved domain? cause i have quite a rare last-name in my country, and i would love it to be the name of my blog, but its reserved.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there. If someone registers a username, the matching URL is automatically reserved for them. As far as I know there is no time limit on this – the domain remains reserved for them as long as they use that username.

Likewise, if you create a blog address, the matching username also gets reserved for you.

You can try searching for the username that matches that URL and if that person has another blog, you can try contacting them via a comment or contact info on their blog and ask them to register the blog and then transfer it to you, but whether they do that will be up to them, if you can track them down at all. Staff will not provide you with that information.

The other option is to see if the domain you want is available to register as a custom domain.http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/register-domain/

Thank you, but how do I search for the user?

  • You’ll have to google the username, or check if there is a blog/contact details listed on their gravatar profile. You should be able to see the gravatar profile here: http://en.gravatar.com/username. (Substitute “username” with the actual username.)

If neither of these options work, there’s noting else to do, I’m afraid.

A blog name can not be turned into an account / user name – but the name that matches the blog name will be off limits (or was a year or so back when I ask about converting a blog to user name)

  • I created a second blog in March and then decided I wanted it under a different username. I created a new account and transferred the blog to that account. After transferring it to a new account I was able to change that account’s username to match the blog’s URL, so perhaps they had changed that.

Interesting – never tried the change name thing – but I ask about blog to user a while back as I have a dormant blog that has a name that I use for some sailing forums

    thanks
