Reserved domain name?
-
Hi there! I’m trying to change the name of my blog to ‘rojefferson.wordpress.com’. A quick google search suggests that it should be available (it says that site doesn’t exist), but when I attempt to use that name, WordPress says it’s ‘reserved’. Could you explain what this means, and if it’s possible to free-up the address? (It seems unfair to ‘reserve’ a domain that no one is using). Thanks!

Somebody has already created that username so the address is reserved for them. If that wasn’t you then you’ll have to choose a similar but different address.

Yes, but my point is that this is blatant case of username squatting: that person has created zero topics, zero replies, has no blog, and has not been active since they created their account 5 years ago!
Name squatting is disallowed on GitHub; does WordPress not have a similar policy? Perhaps I should just port my blog there…

Perhaps an Admin could contact said user and see if they still want their account? I’d message them myself, but do not see any option to contact them.

Hi @irreverentmind as a matter of policy we reserve the site address based on the username (if it is not already taken in our system) so the site address address rojefferson.wordpress.com cannot be registered under another account in this case.
You will need to pick a different address that is not already used or reserved in our system.

Yes, I understand, I was merely hoping you had a policy against username squatting. Thanks anyway!

Thanks for understanding. Be sure to come back if you have any other questions. Stay safe.
