reserved subdomains

  I suspect I previously attempted to start a blog, stopped part way through (for whatever reason), and now the subdomain in question shows up as nonexistent, but reserved and not registerable. Is it possible to find out whether it’s actually reserved by someone else, or automatically reserved after an abortive registration attempt? Apologies for not really supplying specifics at the moment…
