reset categories

  Hi, I’m using a modified slide door theme. This has seven sliding pictures, directly linked to the categories 1 to 7. So far so good.
  But when I was creating the catogories wordpress gave them numbers > 7. So there is no link to them. How can I redet the categories? Or is there any possibility to set them by myself?
