Reseting Themes

I am new at CSS and was thinking about purchasing the custom CSS upgrade. If I purchase it and start editing templates, being new at it, I am afraid of messing the templates up.

If I mess up a template(s), then can I reset/revert them back to the way they were when I first got my WordPress blog account?

I was reading the FAQs and it said to be very careful: “1. Be careful! Often Support staff aren’t able to help you reverse errors made in your CSS code.”

Now I’m not sure if it’s worth messing with the templates in case I screw up the code and can’t return it back to the original.

    Thoughts? :-)

    Thanks!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Yes, all you do is remove everything from the CSS edit window, click the “add to existing…” radio button and then click “save” and it will be returned to the original.

    Thank you! :-)

So nothing to really worry about, then.

What did WordPress mean by “1. Be careful! Often Support staff aren’t able to help you reverse errors made in your CSS code,” in their FAQs then?

If you post some code that makes your entire blog invisible (it’s been done, trust me) then you’re on your own to figure out how to fix it, whether that means tweaking one line of code or stripping out everything and starting over.

Nothing to worry about, and you are welcome. That means that if you make mistakes in your CSS and mess things up, wordpress staff will not fix it for you. There is no official support for the CSS upgrade. You have to figure that you are on your own with the upgrade. There are a few people here in the forums with moderate CSS experience, but we are not always around, so if you run into a problem help might be a while in coming.

    Thanks raincoaster! :)

So basically, if anything gets messed up (ex. invisible blog, etc) and I can’t fix it, then I can always resort to erasing everything out of the CSS edit box, click “add to existing button, then click save and it will revert back? Basically, there’s no way to totally ruin a theme or mess up an account?

Thanks again for answering my questions as I’m new. :)

That’s correct. But DO keep copies of your CSS adaptations. WordPress won’t remember them after you’ve deleted them.

    Gotcha. Makes sense now. :)

    Thanks!

One other suggestion: Put only the sections and the specific declarations that you are changing into the edit window and then make sure “add to existing… ” is selected. That way, it is easier to keep track of what you have changed and what you have not.

Also if you are using Firefox, get the Firebug add-on which will allow you to easily find what parts of the page are controlled by what parts of the CSS. Take about an half-hour to get to know it and it will make things a lot easier.

Excellent suggestions. I read in the FAQs to not paste in the entire original CSS and edit it because it can break links and it would cause the user to have to fix them. I’ll definitely download the toolbar once I buy the CSS add-on.

Once again, I appreciate the help. :)
