resize files in media library
-
Hi all, I am wanting to shrink most of the photos in my media library as I am running out of space. I know there are other ways of storing photos and putting them into my posts, but most of my photos were (somewhat stupidly) uploaded at full resolution and really don’t need to be. I could shrink them down to half the size (or smaller) and still have them plenty big enough for my purposes.
I have figured out how to edit them from the media library and resize them smaller. My problem is this – while I can see on the photo editing window that the file size appears to be smaller (eg. 900kb), the fact it has the option of restoring to the original image tells me the original is still being stored by wordpress, so I am likely not freeing up space (in fact I’m probably taking up extra space by creating extra files with the re-sizing).
So my questions are: is my assumption correct? If so, is there a way to actually resize the files I’ve uploaded, or do I have to delete them, resize them on my computer, and re-upload them (would REALLY prefer not to do it this way as there are scores of photos I will need to edit).
Thanks!

Hi galois – that’s great, but is there a way to optimise said images after they have been uploaded to my media library, or do I have to do it on my computer and re-upload them? This is what my problem is at the moment!

Second option is better.
