Resizing an image added from a URL

  • Unknown's avatar

I am sure that there was once an option to resize an image when adding it from a URL. Now, I can only seem to add the image in it’s full size (sometimes way too huge) – where are the buttons for small-med-large that used to show up?

I looked at the new “improved posting experience” (not) and it isn’t there either.

It feels wrong to grab the image, resize it, then upload it, I’d rather link to the image on the page but not if the image is 5 x the size of MY images.

    Am I missing something?

    cheers

Hello, here’s a helpful, illustrated guide for editing images: https://en.support.wordpress.com/images/image-editing/

A couple of places that may trip you up are: 1) you need to click the “edit image” button when you have selected an image to edit. The tools and cancel/save buttons show up and you may think (as I did) that it’s ready to edit, but nothing works until you click that edit button down at the bottom. 2) If you’re scaling an image, it’s easy to miss (at least it was for me) the scale tools which show up at the far right of the screen, instead of next to the image. This may be different for larger images. I was just trying it out using the dog photo from the support page.

Unless I am mistaken all of this applies to images you have uploaded. There are not sizing fields or edit buttons on the Insert from URL screen that I can see, just insert into post at the bottom. Once you add it the advanced Image Details screen lets you set the alignment, add a caption, set a margin or border, but not set the size.

I just can’t find anything as easy as it used to be, add the URL and select small, med, large.

    Could it be the theme?

I tried a few other themes, but it was the same as you noted.

Once you insert the image in your post, you can click it to select and then drag one of corners to resize it. However this doesn’t affect the file size, just the display size.
