resizing images

    Hi!

am using the theme “puzzle”. Its cropping pictures in an unprofessional way. I have noticed this with most of the themes on wordpress. Is there a way I can resize the pictures so that they are not cropped automatically by the themes ?

    kind regards,
    Wairimu

Hi Wairimu, most new responsive designed themes, especially those that put images into a grid, such as on your main page, have to make adjustments to the images for different browser widths. One way of doing this is to create a cropped image from your original and then position that crop within the space available at any given window width, and this is generally done center weighted. If you widen your browser out and then narrow it slowly down, you will notice that the images change proportions as the window narrows, and goes from three columns to two columns, and then to one column. The crop that the theme and WordPress software create on Puzzle is a 500 x 500 pixel crop. Given how the proportions of the images on the main page change with width, it is going to be challenging to get things so that some important bits of the images are not cropped out at some window/screen width. Some themes keep the proportions of the image consistent and just resize the viewport as necessary, but Puzzle is different and actually changers the proportions.

Generally what I suggest is that you prepare your images with the important part in the center, or as close to center as possible, and make sure there is a bit of space above and below the important part in the image.

Sorry I don’t have a magic solution to this.

Thanks “thesacredpath” for the details explanation so glad you took the time. Could you give me suggestions of themes that “keep the proportions of the image consistent and just resize the viewpoint as necessary” ?

    Will appreciated.
    Thanks,
    W

A quick look at the Showcase, with a search term of “grid” brought up a number of themes. Baskerville images appear to keep their proportions as does Tortuga and Mixfolio, although Tortuga and Mixfolio do crop. Since the keep proportions though, you with them you could just make sure your images have the proportion the theme sets and you should not get any significant cropping.
