Resizing images
-
I’m using the ixion theme. I’m having problems resizing a lot of the pictures in my page.
For instance, using a “cover” image lets me resize the width but the height remains the same, no matter what I do.
I have tried the following things:
Picking a picture that has a small height (about 200 px)
Uploading a new image and then cropping it to the desired height in the “Edit Media” options
Both of these result in a picture that’s the same height as the default picture. It just zooms in more.

I also tried using the “Media and Text” or the “Image” block, but the same problem happens. Even if I upload a super small picture, it automatically resizes it to be the default size.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

@washtenawstiltgrass, I’m not seeing that on the site listed. Could you link us to a specific page or post?

The cover block is not designed to be used for an image only. This block is intended for text content, with an image in the background, and the height of the block is determined by the block’s content. Changing the height of the image you use as the block’s background will not force the block to display at a different size. It will only become taller if you add text content inside the block.
It should be possible to override this default behaviour using custom CSS, but you’d need our Premium Plan to do that.
It looks like you rather want just a full-width image at the top of the page, correct?
Have you tried using just a regular image block, and setting that to full-width alignment?

When you use a regular image block, you can resize it as depicted in the animated GIF at https://en.support.wordpress.com/wordpress-editor/blocks/image-block/#resizing-images

For some reason I can’t edit my post. To clarify– when I set the image block to be full-width, it only gives me the thumbnail, etc. options. If I set it to “align-center”, I am given the option to set exact image dimensions…except not really, because when I change the width (and only the width) it automatically changes the height as well.
Here it is with a width of 600 and a height of 534:

And with a width of 800 and SUPPOSEDLY a height of 534 (but that’s definitely not right since it’s noticeably taller!)

You can resize the image following the animated GIF at https://en.support.wordpress.com/wordpress-editor/blocks/image-block/#resizing-images

Thanks. Yeah, I see what you mean, but I don’t want it to keep maintaining the aspect ratio when I click and drag the handles. I want to be able to change the height and width as needed…Maybe that is not possible?
-
Only the corner handles maintain the aspect ratio. Use the handles in the middle of the width or height side to adjust only those.
-
Yes, that is what I was doing. That is usually how image resizing works. But when I use the handles in the middle, it still maintains the aspect ratio…

-
Got it, I’m also seeing my image maintain its aspect ratio, even when I grab the side handles.
And, while I could go file a bug report saying the aspect ratio is maintained even when I don’t want it, I’m guessing the resizer was built that way on purpose so folks wouldn’t accidentally distort their images.
Can we try a different approach? Would you be willing to send a screenshot or link showing what you’re hoping to accomplish? Maybe there’s another way to go about it.
