Resizing images doesn’t seem to reduce disk usage

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve just realized that my site space usage has grown up very quicly to 20%. So I’ve tried to reduce image size by the 50% in the media library, but surprisingly the site space usage has grown up to 22%… How could it be possible?
    Thanks for helping :-)

Hi, thanks for your suggestion. Usually i use Irfanview batch conversion for massive resizing of the images BEFORE uploading.
Actually, my problem is to reduce the space used by some hi-res images that are already uploaded in the media library and linked to my articles. Because I can’t find an option to substitute the existing images, i’ve used the media library edit command to reduce the images size in pixel one by one. Doing that, any single image dimension in KB was reduced as expected (for example from 4 MB to 800 KB), BUT the total space usage shown in the media library has increased instead of decreasing.
So my problem is to understand why reducing images AFTER uploading didn’t affect the space usage of my site and, at the opposite, increased it?

    Thank you,
    Claudio

  • The best way to do this is to re-size and optimize the images in your image editor of choice, then re-upload them following the recommendations at https://wordpress.com/support/media/image-optimization/

Also, make sure you delete the original that you intend to replace.
