Resizing photos to access more media GB

  I have inadvertently used up the 3.0 GB available for posting photos on my blog because I uploaded large photo files. I didn’t know that I should resize my photos for posting. I tried to get back GB space by editing and resizing the photos in my media library, but the blog media library still states that I have used up 100% of my 3.0 GB, even though I resized/scaled down a good number of photos. What can I do to solve this problem, besides buying the premium plan?
