Resonar theme widget sidebar issue

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi – I’ve just switched to using the new Resonar theme. I like it – but have noticed one problem. Activating the right sidebar widget, there appears at the top of the bar a series of WP icons. Clicking any one of them brings up one of my site categories. Is there any way to replace the WP icon with text or a relevant image?

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    I’m also finding that pull-quotes and blockquotes aren’t displaying as they do in the theme preview:
    – there is a black sidebar beside the quote that does not appear in preview
    – setting centre, left or right align does not alter the appearance of the quote.
    Thanks, Gerry

    Hi Gerry,

    Thanks for the feedback about the new Resonar theme! I’ll try to address your concerns here:

    Activating the right sidebar widget, there appears at the top of the bar a series of WP icons. Clicking any one of them brings up one of my site categories. Is there any way to replace the WP icon with text or a relevant image?

    Those icons are coming from your Social Links Menu. A site’s social links menu will automatically display a social icon that corresponds to the link that’s entered there — there isn’t a built-in way to override those icons. Since your links are to your WordPress.com site, you’ll see WordPress logos there.

    If you’d like to further customize the icons that appear in that menu using your custom design upgrade, I’d recommend posting in the CSS Customization forum for more tips or advice about how to do that.

    – there is a black sidebar beside the quote that does not appear in preview
    – setting centre, left or right align does not alter the appearance of the quote.

    The black sidebar is what you’ll see beside a quote that isn’t specifically aligned left, right, or center to make it a pull quote. You can see an example of that in this post on the Resonar demo site:

    https://resonardemo.wordpress.com/2011/07/07/free-and-priceless-at-the-same-time/

    To create pull quotes, you can add classes to each of your quotes to align them the way you’d like. To do that, you can open the text editor and look for the beginning of your quote — it will look like this:

    <blockquote>

    You can edit that to add the alignment you need. For example, this will align the quote to the center:

    <blockquote class="aligncenter">

    This will align it to the left:

    <blockquote class="alignleft">

    And this will align it to the right:

    <blockquote class="alignright">

    Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)

    Thanks for your speedy response. I had overlooked the fact that the secondary menu can only be assigned to social media links. Pity – other possibilities would be appreciated. Thanks, too, for the guidance on pull quotes (I don’t think the theme outline makes it clear that this must be done in the text editor). Finally – I do wish that heavy black line on the left of blockquotes wasn’t present – it’s an ugly element of an otherwise beautiful theme.

    Hi Gerry,

    If you’d prefer a regular menu (not using icons at all) you could add a Custom Menu Widget instead. You can place the widget at the top of the widget area there. (Sorry I didn’t think of that solution earlier!)

    And I’ll certainly pass along your feedback to our theme developers — both to see if we can clarify the information about creating those pull quotes and to let them know your thoughts about the regular blockquote. Thanks for sharing those thoughts. :)

    How much have I learned today! Thanks for alerting me to the existence of the custom menu widget. I have managed to arrange things to my satisfaction now. And thanks for forwarding my thoughts about the regular blockquotes.
