Responding To Comments
-
When responding to comments to my posts, I normally just post a new comment. However, I’ve seen blog owners responding to comments inside the original comment by editing it.
Something like this:
Comment #1 – waeour asoduf asdof weouwer oweouwer souaosudf weg ouaisdf
Blog Owner responds: weoub adfgaoudsn aosdupiug aweouadfg oausdoiuadfgComment #2 – adsofu abouadg aweouadfg aousdeoiu aguaosidf asdouf aosdug aousd
Blog Owner responds: weoub adfgaoudsn aosdupiug aweouadfg oausdoiuadfgWhich way do you guys prefer? I can see the plus side of doing it this way, because the response isn’t buried halfway down the page and it doesn’t inflate the amount of comments on each post.

A maximum of 15 Recent Comments can be displayed in the sidebar. I believe the motivation for replying in the same comment box is to ensure that the comments coming from people other than the blog’s owner are the ones being prominently displayed in the sidebar.
I prefer commenting in my own separate comment box. If I have had several comments that come in quickly one after another then I can reply to all of them using a single box. I simply address each person by username and start a new paragraph for my response to each one.
-
I forgot to say this:
I don’t accept the notion that responding to each comment separately is “inflating” the comment stats. The natural comment and reply pattern is one box for each comment made and one box for each response made to it. -
Nobody counts comment stats, seriously. There’s a compelling reason to reply in a separate comment, and that is that it shows in the sidebar when you’ve responded. People will check that out.
-
Stats was a bad reason. There are others, like appearance and keeping my response with the original comment.
The reasons for doing it the old fashioned way would include the one raincoaster mentioned and having my most recent responses show up under “My Comments” in the Dashboard.
Unless someone can convince me otherwise, I will continue to do it as a new comment. ;)
-
I gotta admit that I make seperate comments as well. While it doesn’t apply here of course, the WordPress sitemap plugin counts comments as it judges the weight of each post. Considering that a new comment mean teh pages has been updated, I’d learn towards search engine spiders at least noticing the change as well when a new comment is made.
-
Suppose you left a comment and then you check back later. You look at the sidebar Recent Comments and see your own comment is linked there. Well suppose the blogger has used the same comment box as you did – it could look as though they didn’t even bother to respond to your comment. You might click out thinking they hadn’t responded and never return to find out that they did.
-
Gotta agree with TT on that one. *shrug* Never did say I liked the way Sulz does her comments when I pointed it out to folks.
-
I thought it was a good idea and I used it too, until my readers pointed out what I wrote above. They didn’t twig to the fact that I had answered. I stopped when they brought this to my attention.
-
You guys have raised some valid points, so I will continue posting a new comment when I want to reply. Thanks!

@akeem
If you click on your blog’s title then no matter what page you are on you will end up on the front page. If you also want to have a link then simply insert a link to the front page on the Diabetes page. Here’s a link to resources that you may find helpful https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=5257 -
referring to the way i reply to comments, there is a point of it looking as if i don’t reply to comments judging by the number of comments. my logic would be that if the visitor leaves a comment, chances are he has read at least a few of my blog posts and read the comments in it. then he would know how i reply to comments and in this knowledge, would not be turned off by the amount of comments when he checks back.

akeem444, you might want to respect the thread your posting in too. Try looking through the other forum entries, and if you’re still struggling, start a new thread with your question……don’t try to hijack a thread which has no relevance to your query. Just because you found a text input box does not mean it is the right text input box for your needs.

there will definitely be the odd one poster who doesn’t realise this for some reason or other, but i would think it’s pretty marginal. my posts receive comments on a regular basis, so the addition of number of comments in the post is enough for the previous commenter to check back. i’d have replied by then too.

i like to believe i worked hard for it! i pretty much get anxious if i don’t post every day, though i force myself to every now and then. if i posted every day i’d go bonkers!
