    I’m confused as to how exactly I respond to comments, either publicly on the blog or in private to their email. Help.

    Sure thing. This is a link that you can use to get to the comments section of the site listed here in this post.

    From there, you’ll see that there are 16 comments that are pending approval before they get published live on your blog.

    If you scroll down on that page, you’ll also see there’s a menu with each approved comment. This is the All view. You can click on Reply and send comments from the back end of the site this way.
