Responsive layout

I have purchased the ‘Photographer’ theme and set up a website. According to your website, this theme is a responsive layout theme, however my website is not working as a responsive layout. Could you please explain why?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi Eric,

I just took a look at your site and it does appear to be responsive to me.

Just so that we’re on the same page, “responsive” in this case means that the theme detects the size of the browser which is viewing the page and adjusts the output accordingly. You can test this by grabbing the corner of your browser and dragging it larger and smaller. Margins will disappear as it gets smaller. Your images will adjust on the fly to fit in to the smaller window, and galleries will change to have different numbers of columns. If you have widgets, the sidebars will be moved to the bottom and your menu bar will change format.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Hi, thanks for the speedy response regarding the responsiveness of my site.

I’m not sure that we are “on the same page”. When I resize the window of my browser on my desktop computer (I Mac) it kind of resizes but not how I would expect it to.

That’s not too much of an issue however. What concerns me most is that when I view the site on my laptop (Mac Book) it does not resize to fit the screen. I have to scroll to see the rest of the page. I’ve taken a photo of this but can’t see here how to attach it here. I’m hoping this can be resolved as, as it stands, the site is not working for me.

    Thanks,

    Eric Algra

Sure, a screenshot would be great to see what you are speaking about. You can upload it to your media library and then let me know what the file is titled. You can upload to your media library through your Dashboard >> Media Library >> Add New

    Hi

I’ve uploaded the photo of my laptop into my media library. The image is titled ‘E Algra laptop’. Thanks

    Hi Eric,

Thanks for sending the image so that I could understand your concern.

I think I understand now that the miscommunication here is what is included in the term “responsive.” In the case of these themes, it only really extends to the width of the browsers which are being used to view your site. Since blogs (and websites for that matter) are generally oriented vertically, that certain content does not fit in the initial window is not as of as great concern.

You could re-design your site so that it loads fully within the confines of your personal browser, however as each viewer’s browser resolution might be different there is no way to ensure that they will have the same experience which you do.

Hi and thanks for the information.

What would be involved in redesigning my site so that it loads fully within the confines of my personal browser?

    Hi Eric,

Mostly it would involve tinkering with the CSS for the various elements on your page so that they all fit within your browser. Things like your header, your menu, your slideshow, etc would all need to have custom CSS applied through your Custom Design add-on to take up less space.

While we would not be able to help with this, you may want to consider looking in to hiring a qualified theme customizer who can help. We recommend the folks at Elto:
