Responsive theme

I am looking for a new theme and I would like to use one with a home slider image feature.
I like the responsive theme, however I have a free wordpress.com site. In order for me to get the full features such as home slider and customizing the widgets do I need to purchase the “custom design” for $30 or am I missing a step?The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You cannot use CSS editing to add a post slider to any theme so do be clear on that. The Custom Design upgrade allows you to edit fonts, colors, and CSS only. You can change the appearance of a theme, but not its HTML markup or PHP code. I suggest you read this section http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/#frequently-asked-questions

Hi timethief – You know how much I love changing themes. I’m at it again! I want to thank you for the theme links in this thread. This is so helpful — I have no idea how you made theme searches using multiple criteria but this is exactly what I was looking for.
