Responsive theme: have lost 1st line of posts

  • Unknown's avatar

    When I first used this theme yesterday, each post’s opening line was in a font about a px larger and had a drop-down first letter. It was a very nice look.
    This-morning it has gone. Perhaps it’s something I did in CSS, but I have no idea what.
    I would like to get it back again …

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Is this question offensive ?
    I’m somewhat baffled by 48 hours of total silence …

  • Hi there.

    Hola !
    Sí, lo sé. Gracias.

    Hi M-R!

    The theme you currently have active on your site, Responsive, has never had a drop cap first character for its posts and, also, hasn’t undergone any recent changes that would affect the font. After looking over our records though, I can see that you switched to another theme, Oulipo, briefly before changing to Responsive. The Oulipo theme’s demo site shows the drop cap first character and a slightly bigger text for the first line in its posts that you described:

    https://oulipodemo.wordpress.com/

    Is it possible you could be thinking of Oulipo when thinking back to the font? If so, great! If not, let me know and we can come up with some CSS snippets to get Responsive looking the way you wish it to.

    Thanks a lot, Siobhan ! (wrong …? right …?)
    I believe, then, that some of the Oulipo coding brought itself over when I changed; because I am perfectly sure that I was looking at that delightfully plain Responsive layout when seeing the opening lines as described.
    To be honest, I found out what you told me for myself – that Responsive doesn’t have that; but I could make neither head nor tail of it all. Your masterly research has explained it – to my own satisfaction ! :-)
    Would you be kind enough to give me the line of code to set this up within Responsive ?

    .post first line {
    dropped cap first letter;
    font-size: 18px first line;
    }

    [grin]
    Just to amuse you …

    Yes, Siobhan is right. :)

    It’s likely that a caching issue on your browser caused Oulipo’s template to still display shortly after you switched to Responsive. No matter though! If you want to keep Responsive and create a similar effect, we can definitely do that with some CSS.

    The following snippet will make the first letter of your posts bigger than the rest, to create the drop cap effect:

    .post-entry > p:first-child:first-letter {
    font-size: 2em;
    }

    To make the first line of your post slightly bigger than the rest, in addition to capitalising it, the following will work:

    .post-entry > p:first-child:first-line {
    font-size: 1.3em;
    font-variant: small-caps;
    }

    You can change the value of font-size as you wish. :) Let me know how you get on with that or if you have extra questions.

    I say ! – yer a champeen, Siobhan !!!
    That first upper-case letter: can we not make it a dropped cap, please ?
    (That’s the trouble with me: once you start helping me, my demands just grow more urgent. [grin])

  • Unknown's avatar

    Sure thing! Floating the first character to the left will drop it a little below the rest of the text and, optionally, you can also add some margin to further change its positioning:

    .post-entry > p:first-child:first-letter {
    font-size: 2em;
    float: left;
    margin: 0.04em;
    }

    Hope that’s helpful. :)

    No doubt about it ! – helpful is the right adjective.
    :-)
    Much obliged to you, Sioban – many thanks !
