Responsive Theme: Text Glitch
-
Hello,
I’m working with the Responsive theme and a static front page.
The heading should say “What is Technical Writing?” with an image.
But displayed is:
What is
Technical Writin
g?Is there a fix for this? Thanks!

You have a non-breaking space between “Technical” and “Writing” so those two words are basically glued together, meaning at small screen sizes they will break in the middle of a word in order to fit in the narrower space. You should be able to fix it by editing the page and deleting and retyping the space.

Thanks for your quick reply, but I don’t think that’s it.
I put spaces in when typing it in this forum to replicate it’s appearance on WP. Even when viewing the site on PC it’s messed up.
I’ve removed it and re-typed it several times and it still breaks with the “g?” isolated on the last line. Very puzzling.
Any other suggestions? Or am I misunderstanding?
Thanks!

You can turn the word breaking off with CSS if you get the custom design upgrade but it doesn’t fix the problem as it just means the title text will break out of the box and ruin the layout. Can you link me to the page in question so I can take a closer look?

I don’t see any pages published yet, can you check the page in question is not a draft or set to private please?

Could you try replacing the title with “What is Technical Writing?” and let me know if that works (you might need to replace the bit if you then edit the page again). I’m not sure why but the theme is automatically inserting a non-breaking space into the heading and this seems to force it back to a normal space which should fix your problem.

I’m not quite sure what you mean by that. The title is “What is Technical Writing?”
I put a space between “Writing” and the “?” and that seems to work. It looks a little funny though.

Haha oops, I had a character code but it wasn’t treated literally. Can you replace that last space with (hopefully it will work like this):
and check if that makes a difference.

That’s to be expected, the string literally just represents a normal space! When you do it and then save the page and view it does it fix the issue, it has done when I’ve tested it.

I’m entering “What is Technical Writing?” Is that what you’re suggesting?
It’s not working. You’ve spent a lot of time trying to sort this our for me. Maybe I’m just too thick-headed! -
Success!
Thank you so much for taking the time to help me with this. Evidently, I need to learn some CSS?

You’re welcome! You stumbled upon a really strange “feature” that I vaguely remember noticing before. I have no idea if it’s a WordPress thing or if it’s dependant on the theme but sometimes titles get those non-breaking spaces inserted and I can’t seem to find anywhere that explains why that might be or what the circumstances are that will cause it. At least there is a work-around so keep it in mind if the issue crops up again on any other pages!
