Restore cancelled domain

  • Unknown's avatar

I will save the long story and my mass confusion but I registered a domain, cancelled it, and now I believe I need that restored. I only purchased the domain last night so within the 96 hour period of things. I made a mess of misunderstanding several things I read online about domain hosting and trying to use Google’s Sites builder instead of WordPress builder. So my goal, I think, is to use the site I built on Google associate the domain I attempted to register (but never verified) here. Is that the correct configuration?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi @jodygoble2022! You’ve got several options. Looks like you’ve started a site here with us, so if you want to add the domain to that, you can. You’d need a managed hosting plan:
    https://wordpress.com/plans

If you’ll get that we can act fast and restore the domain to it.

    Other options:
    – We can send an invoice for the domain; again we have a few days to restore it as you like, then you can have it redirect to your free site, or you can point it to another host. It can be transferred too, after 60 days.

    – If you don’t mind waiting, domains that were cancelled right after registration just go into a hold for a few days, then the registrar releases them so you can register it wherever you’d like.

Let us know which option you’d like:
    – wait it out
    – buy a plan here
    – restore the domain here without a plan

Also, if it helps, here’s the difference between our services and a free copy of WordPress site hosted elsewhere:
    https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/#overview-of-options

Basically, our service comes with SSL hosting, WordPress maintenance, managed security, and direct support. Or you can buy hosting elsewhere and manage your own installation.

And, GoDaddy’s Site Builder is different from that still. Lots of options out there :)

Let us know how we can help.

    Hi Supernovia,

Thanks for the help. So to clarify before I go about the wrong path again, we have the site built and ready to go on Google Sites. It does allow us to plug in a third party domain (the domain we purchased from you). If I’m understanding correctly, that would require us to reinstate the 18/yr charge we had initially done and then cancelled. We originally cancelled because we weren’t getting the result we wanted from any theme types that were available for our use-case and found the Google Site builder to be a little better and easier to use for our fairly simple use-case.

I believe our desired goal right now is just hooking up the domain we purchased through wordpress (electjoderygoble.com) to our Google Site which appears to allow third party domains.

I do not believe we require any WordPress plan at this time, just the domain registration.

  • Got it, so you have two options:

    – Wait a few days for the domain to be released. Usually, that’ll happen within 5 days since it was newly registered when you canceled.

    Or

    – Un-cancel it here. We would send an invoice for $18, and when that’s paid, the domain would be restored. Then you can point it to Google’s name servers. Assuming you’ve got the domain assigned on their side as well, the site would start working there as soon as DNS propagation is finished.

Just in case you need access to it ASAP, I’ll send the invoice within the next few minutes. We can cancel it on your request if you prefer to wait.

  • Hi @jodygoble2022,

Thanks for making that payment for the Domain restoration – I’ve gone ahead and restored the domain for you now.

At the moment – your domain is still using Name Servers for WordPress.com – which means it would show a site set up here.

In order to point the domain to Google Sites – you would need to follow their instructions to point the site there. I expect they would need to change the Name Servers to point there – which you can do following these instructions from our support documentation.

I see the domain has been restored, thank you so much. However, it says the status is “Verify email”. I scoured my email inbox and do not see any verification email. Can a new verification email be issued?

  • Hi there,

I’ve resent the verification email. Please make sure to also check your spam folder in case it landed in there.

Thanks I think we’re all good on that, verified and good to go
