Restore my backup to the current site

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I had a blog site that was using WordPress with MySQL. I have closed it and backed it up.

I want to restore it to my current website: edgeofdigital.wordpress.com

Please help me. Thank you in advance.

    Regards,
    Celil

    Hi there!

Most sites on WordPress.com use a shared environment, meaning that they all run the same software. This is great because it allows us to update millions of sites at the same time. It means we can fix bugs or offer new features very quickly, which is a win for you as users.

Running multiple sites on the same software can also be dangerous. If we aren’t careful, one site can be used to take down the entirety of WordPress.com. This is why we limit some of the things you can do on our different plan levels. A few of those things are adding custom plugins or themes and access to the phpMyAdmin panel, which is why we require a Business or higher plan for that access.

Thank you, but I can not pay right now. Is there a way to get only my posts from my backup file (*.sql file)?

  • @celilciynekli our free sites don’t support SQL imports. That’s only possible on the Business or Commerce Plan.

But if you’re technically inclined, you could install your own copy of WordPress locally, import the SQL, export a WXR, and then import that here. Just bear in mind we aren’t able to provide support for a local installation; for that you’d use the forums at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

Also, I’m sure you’re aware, the media files won’t be in the SQL dump. Did you download those separately, and will you be able to upload them to each post?

If not, if there’s any chance to restore the site you had so it’s live again temporarily, that will be your best bet. That way the import tool will be able to get any images associated with the site as well. You would use the Import Content option as outlined here. Let us know if you have questions!
