restoring a back up of your blog
-
I appreciate the feedback I received concerning how to back up my blog. It was very helpful indeed. I am needing to know how to restore said back up in the event that my blog goes snap, crackle, pop in the night. Lions and tigers and bears oh my. Seriously, in the event that for some mysterious reason my blog flatlines, I do not want to go through a laborious process of rebuilding my blog, plus the down time that would require. Please provide a detailed explanation of the procedure of restoring my web log from a back up. Thanks so very much.

You can always grab another wordpress.com blog (as a backup blog) and then test out exporting and importing! That is a great way to learn! It is as simple as in the new blog got to ADMIN => MANAGE => Import and then choose the wordpress one. It asks you to browse for the backup file (what we discussed in that other thread, rainy day file!) and then follow the steps! It is super simple! Maybe try it out!

Months ago either Mark or Matt said that we could have a nuclear explosion and the world go boom but all our blogs will still be here, in a day or two.
-
There’s also the matter that wp.com currently has their servers spread between 3 different datacenters around the US.

Dr. Mike,
I was told by Mark that he told me on February 22 in an email, and I quote:
Hi,
Our backups are primarily there for system failure and are not geared for individual backups. If you are intending on trying things I would suggest taking a backup first.Mark
From what Mark told me here, I am going to have to restore my own blog if the system or my blog has a failure. I do not want to loose all my material and the countless hours that I have spent in my blog, ect.
Please check into this for me Dr. Mike and provide detailed information on how to restore from a back up as is done through our Dashboards.
Thanks so much.

I think you’ll find that there’s a misunderstanding of terminology here. I believe that when Mark said “individual backups” he meant doing it for one user so that the blog or post could be restored if the user completely b0rks it (as per his comment on “testing”).
I think that all the blogs here at wordpress.com are regularly and completely backed up so that if all the datacenters went bang at the same time (which is TBH highly unlikely) they would be able to restore the systems and blogs from the latest known good backup.
That said, it’s not a bad idea for you to take your own backup and try what Trent suggested above and restore it to a second blog. You could call it “sctlbackup.wordpress.com” and try restoring your backup to that and see what happens.

There are two other ways to back-up your blog that have not been discussed in this thread yet that the original poster may like to consider.
(1) I use an off-line blog editor called BlogDesk wherein I draft my posts and then upload them directly to my blog. Every post I make is backed-upon my own computer via BlogDesk http://www.blogdesk.org/en/index.htm
(2) I also subscribe to my own rss feeds though Bloglines and therefore have a second on-line back-up http://www.bloglines.com/
When I had a blog catastrophe of my own making and a computer crash I was despondent until Mark directed me to my Bloglines account and I was able to re-post the posts I had lost. -
Thanks Colin and Timethief,
You both have been a big help. God bless you both. I got an email back from Mark and he told me that if in the event that I had an implosion or a blink and my blog was doa I could Import from my dashboard of my blog that I had exported at an earlier time. This helped to clarify matters. I will check into what you shared above and I know I will be in fat city. Thanks again for your help!
Have a great day.
