Restoring two step authentication on a restored iPhone
-
I had to restore my iPhone and the Authenticator app no longer works. It is asking me to scan a barcode, but I can’t find a way for WordPress to recreate the barcode Authenticator needs for setup. So I disabled two step authentication and then turned it back on so I could set it up again. But now WordPress says the mobile phone number I am entering is invalid, but there’s nothing wrong with the phone number I’m entering. How do I get two step authentication setup again?

I figured it out. I was expecting a “two-step authentication disabled” message, instead of the screen to set up two-step authentication after disabling it.
I did the following:
1 – Regenerated a list of backup codes
2 – Used one of those codes to disable two-step authentication
3 – Logged out – this step was important
Then when I logged back in and went to the security settings, I saw that two-step authentication was gone and I had the prompts to set it up again, and it accepted my mobile phone number. -
