Restoring WordPress Blog from WordPress XML
-
Scamicide.com is a wordpress based site hosted by a major company. The blog’s publisher hired a company for a redesign and they have asked me to move the blog over to a wordpress.com hosted blog. I export the xml from the old site and import it into the new site… and the wheel spins. 15 minutes went by… then 5 days… still spinning and no site.
What did I do wrong?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

It might be worth a refresh on the website page. I’ve had this happen to me while installing a plugin and after refreshing it loaded the page saying it was installed.
I have tagged staff to review this one for you since they will have access to your account to help you a bit more in specific into what happened. For more info on importing please check this page.
I hope we can resolve this for you!

Hi there,
I’m sorry to hear you’re having trouble! It can often take some time to import an xml file into a new WordPress.com site, but 5 days does seem excessive!
I’ve flagged this post for a Happiness Engineer to take a look at. Thanks for your patience!

Hello @scamicideblog
Looking at your domain (Scamicide.com), I see that this is not hosted on WordPress.com, but on GoDaddy. What this tells us is that you are WordPress.org user, not a WordPress.com user.
This forum is dedicated only to the websites hosted on WordPress.com.
WordPress.org is the self-hosted version of WordPress.com. To learn more about the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org, check this link: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
The support forums for WordPress.org can be found here: https://wordpress.org/support/. Feel free to follow the link and create a new support request, like you did here.
Getting in touch with your host (GoDaddy) might also be helpful as they might be able to run the import for you HERE.
Hope this helps!

Hi Folks with the number of people answering forum questions at the moment, you may first want to copy your reply and then refresh the page before pasting and hitting the Submit button. We’re getting multiple replies to the same question. Thanks!

@mihaiapetrei – please see what the original poster (OP) said
they have asked me to move the blog over to a wordpress.com hosted blog.

Thank you for the note @justjeniffer!
@scamicideblog I know it might look like it will be spinning forever but next to that spinning icon, you should see a message that says that you will also be notified via email when the import is done, so you can leave that browser tab open for the moment and it should get fully imported after some time.

I am not currently a paid customer – but if this becomes something I can use – i.e. XML imports, I will sign on the dotted line for the help.
The XML file is 16+ megs. It’s 1000+ text based posts. It says “15 minutes or longer depending on media…” but there really isn’t very much media that was included.
@mihaiapetrei – how much longer do you suggest I wait? Then what?
To quote the original post:
15 minutes went by… then 5 days… still spinning and no site.
@justjennifer thank you.
-
Additionally – there is no way to stop the import. I figured that I would try to upload it again… but I can’t stop it – to restart it.
Please help.

@scamicideblog – https://transferto.wordpress.com/self-hosted-wordpress-org/
The maximum size for import XML/WXR files is around 15MB, so you are already topping that. Can you break up the file into smaller pieces with a splitter or try exporting again in smaller files?
Staff will clear out your current import when they look in on this thread.
-
@justjennifer – that’s what I needed to know.
I broke the xml files into the separate elements (posts, pages, feedback, media) and the file sizes are all within range.
Now it’s just a matter of them cleaning out the import … and I will redo it again.
Thank you!

Hi scamicideblog,
Now it’s just a matter of them cleaning out the import … and I will redo it again.
I’ve reset the importer so you can go ahead and run the import again. You’ll need to import one .xml at a time and wait for each one to finish before importing another.
Let me know if you run into any problems along the way.
-
@gemmacevans – thank you. However, I am still having the blue spinner blocking me from being able to import. Should I try a different browser/computer – clean cache? Or should I start a different blog url?
-
Hi scamicideblog,
However, I am still having the blue spinner blocking me from being able to import.
Oh! There aren’t any imports in progress on scamicideblog.wordpress.com at the moment. Let’s try a couple of things…
Before importing again, please clear your browser cache using these steps:
Can you also try using another browser to see if the same problem occurs?
Let me know how you get on.
-
@gemmacevans – I appreciate your help. I cleared the cache (forced refresh, then clearing of the cache files as described in the documentation). I used a different browser (ie versus firefox). I even used a private browser within firefox.
Still seeing the blue wheel. I am sorry.

Hi scamicideblog,
I used a different browser (ie versus firefox). I even used a private browser within firefox. Still seeing the blue wheel.
Okay, thanks for trying. I’ve sent an email to the address your account so you can send me a copy of the file you are having trouble with. Please let me know if you don’t receive it.
Thanks!
