Resumed blogging after ten years – need advice

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi everyone (who reads this post) :)

I’ve resumed blogging after a gap of ten years and loving it and WP (last blog was on blogspot). Mine’s a personal blog with travel, some short pieces, and lots of pictures. I’ve got 60 posts in about 2 months now!

If I were to change the name from what it is to something more personal – say my own initials (VA) or something similar, do you think it’d confuse the heck out of my tiny bunch of followers and visitors?

Also if i change the name (i.e. also the URL) do i need to make that change in all the posts?

    Any response appreciated.
    thanks!

You asked me to visit this for you so here are my thoughts …
    1) Name change – could be a wee bit of confusion of course, but overall it can be a smooth transition for most. Might help if you add a sticky note to your blog’s home page to announce/mention the change from old to new name just to help clear up any confusion there may be.
    2) There are a few ways to move/change blogs. This WP support article should help you figure out which you want to do and the steps to do it. It includes mention of importing/exporting content too.

    Hope that helps … Marianne

  • Hi @indiasologuy — congrats on returning to blogging!

@alongthesideoftheroad’s suggestion about announcing the change in a post (and/or explaining briefly in a temporary Text Widget in your sidebar) would be helpful! Overall, it shouldn’t be too confusing, and it is a good change in the long term so your name best reflects you and your work.

Your blog name can be more personal — especially if it truly fits you and what your site is about. Think about very short names, however (eg, just your initials) — at first glance, it may take a while for a new visitor to figure out what the site is about (be sure to include a visible tagline!) because two initials don’t initially reveal very much.

We’ve written a number of posts on choosing the perfect blog name — here’s one I wrote last year, which also links to Q&As with bloggers on how they chose their names (on the left-hand side):

@cherilucas – many thanks for your insightful post. I completely forgot to return to this thread, busy as I was dishing out more posts on the blog. :) I’ve also started going through some of the content on dailypost and blogging U.
    cheers!
