Retrieve content from exported source files

  I had a site on my own webhosting. I decided to leave the web hosts and left in a hurry just FTP-ing the files (wp-content, etc). So I have all the source code for my site, and I can see all the photos and .gpx files, etc. that I had on my blog, but I can’t find the actual text. Where is it stored?

  I’m moving my site to Hostinger and I’d thought that I’d just FTP the files over and it would re-appear (rookie error it would seem) If anybody knows how I can quickly get my site back without having to extract all the content and cut and paste it to a new site then I will be forever grateful, failing that, what can I do/ what are my options?

  Hi there. I think you’re looking for the WordPress.org forums. This forum is only for free WordPress.com blogs, and as we don’t even have FTP access on our blogs, we’re not the people to advise you on fixing this.

  You can find the .org forums for self-hosted WordPress here: http://wordpress.org/support/ If you don’t already have a username on that forum, click the register button in the upper right corner so you can post in that forum.

  If your exported data is in the form of an XML file, you could try importing it to a free WordPress.com site, and then creating a new export file from here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/import/

  Thanks for the response. It’s not a wordpress.org site, it was hosted completely externally, but I’ll try their support pages. Unfortunately I didn’t export as a XML file, as you say, if I had I wouldn’t have a problem. :( Rookie error I guess, but the data must all be in there as I have all the files that presented the site to the world. I suspect there is a version difference somewhere; i.e., if I was placing these files and it was being read by Version x.xx of wordpress then it would display it.

  Just to clarify, WordPress.org is not a hosting platform like WordPress.com, but is a software package used by self-hosted sites. That’s why their forum should be able to help you with this. Even if you did not use the WordPress.org software specifically, they might have ideas on how you can recover the data from the files you have. Good luck :)
