Retrieve old data

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello

I was using WordPress previously before moving to a new platform and I just realised that there was some data that I require back when I was using WordPress. Is there a way to retrieve this data?

    Thanks in advance

    Ron

    Hi rondo89,

Is this the site ( http://www.theronakshah.com/ ) from which you wish to retrieve data ?

This site is not hosted on WordPress.com. The hosting provider is NETWORK SOLUTIONS, LLC.
This public forum provides support to sites hosted on WordPress.com only. This is a self-hosted WordPress.org site.

Please check if you can directly contact to your hosting provider to retrieve your data.

If you’ve any queries then you can post them in WordPress.org support forum here, https://wordpress.org/support/
If you’re curious to learn about WordPress.com and WordPress.org, please read here, https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

If you were using WordPress.com account for your previous site and if you haven’t deleted your site/data then you can login to account and get the data back.
You can use this account recovery form to reinstate your access if you’ve lost the access,

    I hope this helps you.

    Hi pratikawari28

    Thanks for your answer.

I used to use Bluehost previously and had WordPress installed. I was using both to create my posts which were going to my site – http://www.theronakshah.com. I had some draft posts that I need to get the data off. Currently, my site (the one in question) is hosted by someone else.

When I log into WordPress now, I see my posts briefly and when I click on them they disappear.

How can I go about this?

    Regards,

    Ron

  • Hi there,

If you used to have your site with Bluehost, your only option is to contact them and find out if they still have a backup of your site on their end. Then you can upload it to your new site at the current host via FTP.

When I log into WordPress now, I see my posts briefly and when I click on them they disappear.

Do you mean when you log in here on WordPress.com? It’s possible we might still have some info from your site cached in Jetpack, but the content of the posts themselves are not on our servers – Jetpack fetches those from your host’s server when you open them in the editor on our end. So we don’t have any access to the data you’re missing. Only Bluehost will be able to help you with that.

    Hi kokkieh

    Thank you for your answer.

I got in touch with Bluehost and went through the cached wp-content items but couldn’t find anything there. If you are saying that some info is cached from the site would it still be there in Jetpack?

If I connect my domain to WordPress will I be able to get that info? If yes, will it affect my site as it’s currently active and hosted with another provider.

    Regards,

    Ron

  • To be clear, the possibly cached info I refer to is just meta-data, i.e. post titles and excerpts that you’re briefly seeing as you mentioned above. The actual content of the posts are not stored anywhere in our system – Jetpack queries your server in real time for that info whenever you try to interact with a specific post.

Connecting your domain to us won’t give you access to that content, as the content has never been on our servers.

If you did not export a backup of your site before moving to a new host, and Bluehost no longer has a backup in their archives, then your content is most likely lost.

It does look like some content on your site was archived in the WaybackMachine, but the most recent snapshot they have of your site is almost a year old. It’s the only other way I know of to retrieve content from a site that’s no longer online.

    Hi kokkieh

    Thank you for your answers.

Bluehost did restore a back up however, the post in question was a draft post and not published. According to them, draft/unpublished posts are not backed up. Do you think this would be correct?

    Regards,

    Ron

  • That would depend on how they do the backups on their end, I suppose. I’m not familiar with the database structure on the self-hosted WordPress software, as we don’t deal with database tables at all on WordPress.com, so I don’t know how draft posts are stored there.
