Retrieving domain name

  • Unknown's avatar

This site and domain name were managed by the wife of the owner of the trucking company. They are now in divorce and she won’t give access to the domain name. I see it expired on 4/13. When will it come out of retrieval and be released back to the public for purchase? All Kevin’s trucks are lettered with this domain name. Thanks.

First things first: what is the URL of that site?

I did not want to post the domain name in case someone gets the bright idea of trying to beat me to the purchase once it’s released. I am new to WP and was hoping the form I was filling out would go straight to support, instead of posting to a public forum.

My question is, if the domain name expired on 4/13, when does it get released, or is there a way to retrieve it before-hand without help from the ex wife?

Domain expiration is a lengthy process, https://wordpress.com/support/domains/domain-expiration/.
You can’t just claim a domain. To know what’s possible you’ll need legal advice which we can’t give you.

  • Hi there,

It’s hard to know when a domain will be released when it expires. It can take from a few days to a few months. However, you can check periodically or sign up for a service that’ll alert you when it becomes available.

Also, do you know if that domain is registered through us (WordPress.com) or a different provider?

It’s through WordPress / Sawbuck.com. I’m familiar with domain ownership and all the timing issues that come with it. I was hoping someone here would let me know what WP/SB’s policy was for releasing so I could prepare myself. Also, if the domain name has been “captured” by someone, whether an account change could happen with appropriate paperwork and legal documentation.

Without knowing the domain name in question, we’re not able to advise what timeframe you’re looking at or any other details as each top-level domain has different policies and timeframes when it comes to expiration, redemption, and release. If you want to share the domain so we can look up the specifics, Staff can redact it from your post afterward.

Additionally, if the domain was registered here at WordPress.com and it expires, we receive no notification or notice when that domain would be released to the pool of available domains, so you would need to keep checking a domain registry periodically to see if it’s available for purchase again.

You can read about the domain expiration process here, but again, it won’t give you the specific information you’re looking for:

    https://wordpress.com/support/domains/domain-expiration/

Also, if the domain name has been “captured” by someone, whether an account change could happen with appropriate paperwork and legal documentation.

You would need to consult with an attorney for the answer to that question.

The domain name in question is [redacted]

Please redact this info when you’ve read it and can advise. Thanks.

Thanks for that information. I’ve redacted the domain as requested.

The status of the domain is pendingDelete, a designation set by ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, which is the regulatory authority for all domains and domain registrations) and usually lasts 5 days past the end of the redemption period:

    https://www.icann.org/resources/pages/epp-status-codes-2014-06-16-en#pendingDelete

ICANN controls these dates/timeframes, so we don’t have any control or influence over how fast or slow these things are processed. However, since there is no exact date/timeframe for these things, we can take our best guess based on when the domain was canceled and assume the domain could be available for repurchase anywhere from now to a week from now or more. I just checked and it is not available at the time of this post.

My recommendation would be to check your preferred domain registrar daily or twice a day starting tomorrow to see if it’s available to purchase. Then, with luck, you’ll be able to grab it before someone else.

    Best of luck!
