Retrieving lost content

  • Unknown's avatar

I was typing along on a long document with many links when suddenly, I got knocked out of WordPress. When I pulled it back up, all the stuff I’d written over the past 24 hours had been lost, leaving the document in the state it was in last night, even though what I’d worked on today had been auto-saved!

I’ve tried in vain to retrieve the lost work, but to no avail. Any suggestions?

    Thanks.
    Jeff

  • Hi Jeff –

Have you already tried doing a revision?

Write back to let me know which post/page is involved. Also, double check that you don’t have WordPress.com opened up on any other devices.

Yes, I tried that. The revision page doesn’t show any of my work that was done Saturday evening or Sunday before about 5 am PST. Here’s the post involved, which I’ve done some later work on:

Also, I switched to Blocks Editor, which I don’t like. Now when I look at the document in HTML format, it’s one long continuous jumble, which makes editing extremely cumbersome.

  • Hi Jeff,

The revision page doesn’t show any of my work that was done Saturday evening or Sunday before about 5 am PST

If the revision history doesn’t show your most recent changes, it means those changes were never saved to our servers. Your mention of “getting knocked out of WordPress” points to a timeout of some kind in your browser, which could also have caused autosave to fail. Unfortunately there’s nothing we can do in that case, as the content was never sent from your browser to our servers.

Now when I look at the document in HTML format, it’s one long continuous jumble

When you start a post in the classic editor, and then switch to the block editor, all the content is converted into a single classic block, so the HTML will look as you describe.

However, it looks like you’ve since converted that post into blocks, and the HTML now shows me the proper block markup that matches the content in the visual view. If it still appears as a mess to you, please take a screen shot and upload it to the media library so I can take a look at what you see.

I do want to caution you about modifying the HTML directly in any way if using the block editor, though. The block editor is designed as a way to format content without ever having to modify HTML directly, and making direct changes to the HTML can cause several blocks to break, as not all blocks allow all types of HTML.

If there are specific changes you’re trying to make using HTML, please let us know what those are – perhaps there’s a way to achieve the same end without having to edit the HTML directly.
