I suddenly get this error on only one of my blogs when trying to retrieve the pages. This error does not occur when retrieving posts or on my other WordPress blogs. The error is on the http://www.vespaadventures.ca blog.

    Error:
The response to the wp.getPages method received from the blog server was invalid:

Invalid response document returned from XmlRpc server

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi Peter,

Thanks for reporting this to us. We’re working on a similar issue that likely has the same cause. I’ll let you know once I have an update for you.

    Thanks for your patience!

  • Hi Peter,

We’ve deployed a fix for the bug that we believe is the root cause for Live Writer. Could you kindly check to see if it’s working for you now, and if not, we’ll keep at it.

    Thanks for your patience!

    Hi,

I just tried and received the same error

  • Hi again Peter,

I’m sorry about that; we’re at it again.

    Thanks!

  • Hi Peter,

Not yet. We’ve been getting inconsistent results on our testing and still drilling down where the exact root cause lies.

    I appreciate your patience.

  • Peter, I was just looking at one of your pages to see if I could sort this out and saw that you took over editing. That’s just fine, but I wanted to let you know that I’m a staffer who was looking at your post and that you weren’t being hacked or anything. We believe we’ve sorted out the issue. I’d like to submit an edit to the post in question to test it out but don’t want to override any changes you may be doing. Can you confirm that it’s ok for me to do this? Thanks!

I am not clear at what is going on?

Please call me at 613-933-3055 or provide me a number to call. I have changed my username and password because I thought someone was hacking me

  • I’m a developer for wordpress.com and was investigating your issue by looking at the edit screen for one of your pages. The issue seems to be that special characters in a page are breaking the parser for the xml-rpc client you’re using. I was going to test editing the post to remove the special characters. While I was viewing the edit screen for the post, you happened to see me in there and think you were being hacked. I’m sorry my presence there was alarming.

We don’t really have infrastructure for providing phone support, but if it puts you more at ease, you could send an email to help@wordpress.com citing this post and to my attention and we can carry on there or at least figure that my ability to respond to a post there is validation of my position at wordpress.com. Please let me know if you’d like to do this so that I can know to go and check for the email.

May I have permission to edit the “How to” page to remove special characters and test out our theory regarding special characters and xml-rpc? Thanks!

Please proceed. Sorry about the confusion. I was getting e-mails that my pages were being edited and could not understand how or by whom.

  • I believe I’ve got this sorted out now. The culprit, as I briefly explained before, was the existence of a number of special characters in your pages. In some cases, they were curly quotes or apostrophes. In others, the acute accented é was the culprit. In still others, it was an em-dash. And in one case, I wasn’t able to see the character but was able to remove it by isolating the text and backspacing to remove extra spaces (there was probably a hidden character lurking there). I’ve edited several of your pages to fix issues, and I can now successfully retrieve posts via an xml-rpc client.

To safeguard against this in the future, it’ll be best to use entities in posts where possible — for example, you can use &emdash; and é where needed for those characters. The raw characters render ok on the front end but seem to wreak havoc with xml parsing by xml-rpc clients.

Both because it took us so long to resolve this and as a small token in apology for the scare I gave you earlier, I’ve given you $50 in credits toward your next purchase. Please let us know if you’re still having any trouble after my fixes. Thanks!

    Hi,

I have one last question. I was wanting to upload my CIS Software videos into my blog. They upload ok but wordpress seems to reduce the resolution. I rendered the video in HD MP4 format and it plays but when you click full screen it is not so clear. I am now uploading everything to youtube (puts me a day behind) and adding the youtube videos instead. Why is this?

Sorry for the delay. Could you please send a link of the video you are referring to?

    Looking forward to your reply.
