Retrofitting parent / child categories (using Modern News)
-
I have about 20 categories, that I now wish to streamline into a single parent category and collapse the rest into sub-categories / child categories. But it seems possible only to do this the other way around (i.e., add a new category and allocate its parent, not reorganize). (I then intend to add new overarching categories – i.e., I’m expanding the scope of the blog itself).

The blog linked to your username is not a free hosted WordPress.com blog. If that’s the blog in question then you have accidentally posted to the wrong support forum. We cannot help you here at WordPress.com with that site as it’s not being hosted by WordPress.com and we run on different software. This is the correct forum for your software http://wordpress.ORG/support/
WordPress.com vs WordPress.org: The Differences -
Hi there time thief – I don’t follow your response; I have read The Differences and I can assure you that the blog I am referring to IS a free-hosted wordpress.com blog; it is not self-hosted and is a normal wordpress blog, simply using a premium theme…

This site which is linked to your WordPress.com username > http://www.gailjennings.co.za/ is not a free hosted WordPress.com blog.
If you are referring to a free hosted WordPress.com blog please post an active link starting with http:// to the blog in question.

If I had a dollar for every person with a WordPress.ORG install said that I would be on a warm beach all this winter. Even if we wander around the not a WordPress anything linked to your name there is no guarantee that would be the blog you are asking about –

The site IS a free hosted blog, so I really don’t understand, sorry! Please could someone respond here. It is a premium theme, but is free-hosted. The data linked to my username must be incorrect.

So what’ the definition of free-hosting them? I don’t pay for hosting, it’s with wordpress.com, so who knows then? According to the definition you referred me to, my blog is indeed free-hosted (not to mention the fact that I don’t PAY for hosting). But if being rude makes you feel better, glad I could help.

@gailjennings
There is no gray admin WordPress.com bar at the top of that site. There is no footer links on that site that indicate it’s being free hosted by WordPress.com. There is no little smiley icon that indicate the blog stats are being collected by WordPress.com. This is the report and it does not indicate that the site is being hosted on WordPress.com servers. http://ismyblogworking.com/www.gailjennings.co.za

You are looking at my personal website, which is indeed a personal website, has nothing at all to do with WordPress. No clue why, and how, you would be doing that, and where you would have got my website details from? My blog, which is what I am asking about, is http://www.rideyourcity.wordpress.com.

Unless members provide a link to the blog in question,when members post here we click their username to locate the free hosted WordPress.com blog they are referring to. You have linked your personal site to your WordPress.com username. You can change that link now so this confusion does not recur. Dashboard -> Users -> Personal Settings -> then scroll down to Account Details. Then scroll down to where it says ‘Website‘ select the URL for your primary wordpress.com blog and then save changes.
Now every time you sign into the forum we can all click on your username and your blog will be linked to it. And every time you leave a comment on a blog your username can be likewise clicked and your blog can be instantly located.

Thanks for the link to the WordPress.com blog in question. What you describe in the OP is not normal behavior. However, your theme is a premium theme and we Volunteers answering questions on this forum have no knowledge of how they are designed to operate. When you purchased your premium theme what came with that purchase was support directly from the theme designer in the Premium Theme Support Forum. There is a link for the specific Premium Theme support forum under Appearance -> Themes in your blog’s Dashboard, but do note that the premium theme must be active and you must be signed in as the user who purchased it in order to see it.
