Returns and Paragraph Breaks not Appearing in Post!

  • Unknown's avatar

Has anyone had issues when copying and pasting from word or some other source INTO a WordPress post? I have had several instances where paragraph breaks are being deleted and instead it will appear as a paragraph BLOCK. As in, there will be two or three paragraphs where the space between them has been separated and it will appear as one long, run-on paragraph.

I have no idea why this occurs or how to prevent it from occuring. The problem seems to be rather intermittent as it does not happen in all post or even more than once in the same post. Some paragraphs are properly spaced, while other paragraphs all flow together. I’ve even gone as far as to insert the actual HTML tags in order to manually force the paragraph breaks. Instead, I will save, update the page, and the tags will have been removed. Has anyone else experienced this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thank you,
    Nate

If you use the Paste from Word button, it should be fine – I have no problems with that. If you paste directly, then you’ll likely have problems.

Bad idea making your email address public too, unless you love spam.

Pasting from Word can be problematic, and I’ve had instances where paragraph breaks disappear. Word is designed for print media, not the web, and sometimes some of the Word code seems to confuse the wordpress.COM editor filters and scripts.

See this post I did recently on One Cool Site for a solution to this problems that has always worked for me.

I wouldn’t say the Word code confuses the editor. ;)

I’d say the Word code was designed to be a complete document as created and saved by Word, and pulling out pieces of it and placing it in a different environment (i.e. the WordPress.com layout) will be inconsistent and often causes problems.

Ronsrealm’s suggestion is good: try the Paste from Word button:

Another thing you can do is paste the content into the html editor and then switch back to the visual editor to add any formatting you want.
