reuse deleted site name?

I created my first site today, got things all messed up and decided to delete the site and start over. I deleted the site ok, but now, even though the site is deleted, the system won’t let me reuse the same name. Is there any way to get that name free to be reused? The site existed for less than a day and no one else but me posted there or even knew it existed.

You cannot recover or register any deleted blog URL. Deleted blog URLs are not recycled, regardless of who registered and deleted them and no exceptions are made.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/recycling-blog-names/To prevent accidental or inadvertent deletion of blogs, there are multiple warnings given that blog deletion is permanent and irreversible. Lastly, a verification link is sent in an email and it must be clicked to delete a blog. If clicking that link does not work then copy and paste it into your upper browser window and click. Once the verification link for deletion is clicked the blog URL is forever gone, gone, gone.

Then if you wish to you can register a domain via a domain mapping upgrade because it does not matter what the underlying .wordpress.com address is when you are domain mapping.

Yes, I got that email and responded to it. It should have explained explicitly that the name of the blog could not be reused. All is says is “the current site is gone forever.” It doesn’t say that another site cannot be started under the same name, and none of the “multiple warnings” said that. Logically, if “the current site is gone,” then the prohibition against another site using that name should also be gone. At least that would seem intuitively to be the case. There should have been an explicit warning about that. It took me a while to come up with that exact name, and I’m very fond of it.

Just so you know, one of the options in the Delete Site drop down menu is to “Empty my site of all content”.
Regardless, I’ve tagged this for Staff to consider clarifying the language in the Delete Site notifications to include that the site URL cannot be reused once deleted.

Yes, I tried that first, but it told me I had to contact someone at WordPress to go that route, and that no one would be available until tomorrow, so I just figured I’d wipe the whole thing out and start over.

I have had this same experience with my start-up. Thank you for the discussion and as Mbeln points out, I hope the wording can be more clear for other users.
