Revenue sharing for premium themes?
-
Hello
Assume that a designer creates a theme that is later published on WordPress.com as a premium theme (that is, people need to pay to use it). Then, does the designer make some money on this? That is, is there some revenue sharing between Automattic and the designer?
What about premium plugins? (Or perhaps there aren’t any premium *plugins* available for a wordpress.com website? Only *themes*?)
(As far as I’ve understood, there need not be such an arrangement, since themes are GPL compatible (well the PHP code at least), and anyone who has the theme source code could modify and redistribute/resell the theme, and they would not have to pay the original theme designers.)
((Perhaps I should mention that I think both cases (i.e. both with and without revenue sharing) are fair and okay. — When I asked a somewhat similar question elsewhere, someone was a bit upset. However I suppose that also the-case-without-revenue-sharing is in the spirit of the GPL — that you’re free to build upon the work of others and redistribute/resell.))
((I also asked this question on wordpress.org and it was suggested that I ask here instead.))
Kind regards, KajMagnus

Whatever the financial arrangements are between WordPress.com and themes designers of the premium themes which have been adapted to run on our multiuser software here is not known to us Volunteers. We help only with support questions about free hosted WordPress.com blogs.
What about premium plugins? (Or perhaps there aren’t any premium *plugins* available for a wordpress.com website? Only *themes*?)
What about them? There is no FTP access to free hosted WordPress.com blogs and we cannot upload any third party themes.

http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/adding-new-themes/On free hosted wordpress.COM blogs we can only use the themes which have been coded to run on this multi-user software and made available to us here. > Appearance > Themes and no others. We cannot edit either themes or templates on free hosted wordpress.COM blogs. > http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/editing-themes/

Hi TimeThief, thanks for your reply.
(Concerning “what about plugins” — I was trying to ask the same questions as I asked about themes, but about plugins instead. That is, “revenue sharing for premium plugins?”. — I knew already that it’s not possible to upload own themes and plugins, sorry if I wasn’t clear.)
Best regards, Magnus

Understood now. :)
Bottom line: We Volunteers have no information about revenue sharing at all. That has to come from Staff.
