Reverse Chronological Order

    I’m trying to find “list blog entries in reverse chronological order” for archives and I”m not seeing an option for it.

    I’m also not finding “reverse chronological order” for comments.

    Please tell me that WordPress has this (presumably) basic functionality.

    No they don’t.

    With comments, typically you read the post, and then read the comments, and it makes much more sense if the oldest comment is at the top since comments many times resemble a conversation with one comment building on another.

    As far as posts, if someone reads your blog regularly, they are not going to want to have to page down numerous times (maybe a lot if you have a lot of posts) to get to the newest post. Blogs in general always have the newest post at the top.

    /nod to pan

    I had thought of that also but didn’t post it.

    Hi tsp! Neither would I, but I thought we’d best add it after I saw michaeljpastor’s blog: it’s currently in Blogspot, where they don’t have pages, so maybe he’s unaware of this added advantage.

    It’s the archive list where I want reverse chronological order. And I’ve migrated my blog to wordpress, even though my blogspot blog is still there. Hurricane Ike hitting Ohio (and it became a Hurricane again when it hit our state) stopped the migration mid-stream.

    And, with all due respect, “don’t should on me.” You don’t know how I’m structuring my blog or the purpose behind it; or how my readers will read the blog, or how I’d like to direct them to read it.

    Yes, I’m aware of pages, but that doesn’t satisfy my requirement either; I am using them for something else. They also break the structure, and thus far, the editing/organizing structure seems pretty wonky.

    It was just a simple feature inquiry; not a request for Blogging 101.

    michaeljpastor, give the volunteers a bit of respect please. They do a great job of helping many folks who have questions and they do it for free. (and for more blog hits…wink, wink.) So, please be a bit more polite in the future with responses. Hey, a cheery word makes everybody’s day a little better!

    Just kidding about the blog hits…sorry guys!

    @michaeljpastor

    Sometimes you get the most light from a burning bridge. Jung would know what I mean by that.

    Go self-hosted, learn PHP scripting or stay at blogspot.

    @michaeljpastor: Instead of lecturing us, it would have been more useful to simply tell us how you want your blog structured or what you are trying to achieve, PRECISELY because we cannot possibly know that in advance; who knows, we might have a trick or two in our bags.

    Good luck with your blog.

    @beemeister: Thanks!

    there was nothing disrespectful about my response. if anything, their responses were disrectful by their condescending tone and immediate “shoulds” and lectures.

    you didnt need to know what it was that i was trying to do. you just needed to answer my very specific question.

    i was being polite. i said with all due respect. there was nothing in there that was insulting. i wasn’t the one doing the lecturing. so painting me as the villain here is hardly the case.

    and “learn <insert code here>”, or go somewhere else, is just elevating the situation. again, not me causing the problem here.

    Well, let’s just let it go and start anew then.

    Changing the order on the archives page, and comments would require access to the underlying theme PHP script files, which is not allowed here. The reason is because we are on a multi-user platform which means we all share the same files. If one person changed something it would change it for all other users of that particular theme.

  • Am I missing something here? Blog archives are already shown in reverse chronological order on WordPress.com blogs.

    There is a way to do this manually. There is an example at http://onecoolsite.wordpress.com/post-index/ . You could create a page and then add links to the posts in reverse order. Not an automatic solution, but all I have to offer. Of course this solution would not have excerpts unless you also wanted to add those manually.

    Actually Tellyworth, I think he wants the oldest posts at the top. Archives here have the newest posts first.

    I guess it depends on one’s definition of reverse.

    The phrasing of straightforward answers seems to be received somewhat problematically. Perhaps we should all wait for further clarification from the OP as to exactly what he’s looking for.

  • Unknown's avatar

    My question was answered. WordPress doesn’t support it. And yes, I mean “Show Oldest Posts First” when I said reverse chronological order. Manual doesn’t work for me. Thanks for the answers.

    You’re welcome.

    What you want would be possible with a self-hosted blog, there may even be a plugin that would do it. My self-hosted blog, which is hosted at A Small Orange, costs me under $4 per month average, and that includes the cost for my 3-year domain registration.

  • Sorry, reverse chronological order usually refers to newest first, hence my confusion. The generic blog structure (newest posts at the top) is usually described as reverse chron.
