Hello there,
Happy to help you with this.
– a top level domain hosted on AWS and not a wordpress site e.g. xyz.com
This part is possible to do. It’s possible to connect a domain as per these steps here: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/connect-existing-domain/
– a wordpress blog hosted on wordpress and sitting on a subfolder of the main domain e.g. xyz.com/blog (i.e. a reverse proxy to this site)
This part wouldn’t be possible, however, it is possible to host a site under a sub-domain, for example – blog.xyz.com. The subdomain can be connected in a similar fashion to the above. Please see steps here, on how this can be made possible: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/connect-subdomain/#connecting-a-subdomain-to-your-word-press-com-site
Would you be willing to tell me what you’re looking to build and what you’re hoping to achieve? I could perhaps offer some advice on guidance on how best to achieve the set up.
These are the plans we have available at WordPress.com – https://wordpress.com/pricing/. You would need at least one of theses plans, in order to set up a custom primary domain.
I hope this helps in the meantime and looking forward to hearing more.
