Revert to free subscription and links are broken

    I went from a paid subscription to a free subscription last year and have only just noticed that all my links are broken.

    I looked up the support page and found this query but it’s closed. Great! https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/revert-to-wordpresscom

    The ‘Revert’ Q&A seems to answer my question, namely do I have to rename all my pages one by one? The answer is yes, which is annoyingly tedious.

    What if I were to take up a paid subscription once more? Would I have to rename all the pages back to what they are now? (That’s assuming the domain name is still available, obvs.)

    Ok, so I read https://wordpress.com/support/changing-site-address but I still don’t get why WordPress – with all of its web expertise – can’t convert all my pages in one fell swoop from the paid subscription  name –  roadlesstraveller.net/xyz etc to the free subscription name roadlesstravellernet.wordpress.com/xyz etc.

    It looks like a scam or a kick in the teeth for daring to go back to a free subscription.

    Thank you for reaching out. It appears there’s some confusion regarding what occurs when you revert from a custom domain to the free WordPress.com URL.

    Your Posts and Pages on your site have been automatically updated to use the new URL. You can verify this by navigating to either your Posts or Pages in your dashboard and clicking “view” – this will redirect you to the roadlesstravellernet.wordpress.com version of the page.

    The only exception applies to links you’ve directly added to your site, such as those on your Front Page. You’ll need to edit these links in that page in the Page editor to update them. Links included within your content manually won’t be automatically updated in this manner.

    You might consider expanding your menu to include these links or adding a Page List Block to your homepage. This way, any changes to your site URL will be reflected automatically.
