    Hi there,

I’d like to keep my wedding website live, but would no longer like to pay for the custom domain of “mollypluschris.com” How can I change from a paid custom domain to a free wordpress.org/com domain?

    thank you!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Howdy!

I’ve removed the custom domain mollypluschris.com from your site, so you’ll stop getting the expiration emails. :)

All your content will be live, just as it was, at the address mollypluschris.wordpress.com

Hi there! I am afraid I may have broken something. It appears the site is not loading; is it because I typed in the new URL manually in settings?

The entire site is missing, and my prior login to mollypluschris.com/wp-admin is defunct :(

Did I lose all the content??

    Hi again,

Without the custom domain anymore, you’ll need to access the WordPress.com admin dashboard here:

    https://mollypluschris.wordpress.com/wp-admin/

I’m also not seeing any Posts or Pages, but your blog records aren’t showing any posts or pages being deleted either. I’m looking at the Google cached version of the page and it also seems to missing some of the WordPress.com tags.

Did you by any chance have your domain mapped to some other hosting service using custom DNS or the like?

This is truly a weird situation so I’m getting a developer to take a look. Removing a custom domain doesn’t have any affect on the content in the *.wordpress.com version of site, so going blank like this is highly unusual.

Please let me know if you recall any other kind of custom details about the site I can bring to the developer.

We’ll do our best to get this back up.

    Best,

    -Alex G.

Hi there, yes, I think the site used a custom DNS because it used a non-wordpress theme…. DreamHost and LighteningBase.

    Any ideas on next steps?

Ah, well that explains it. Sorry I didn’t fully realize the situation before. Removing a custom domain isn’t an unusual affair so I didn’t look much past it. This is definitely my fault though.

The good thing is, your content is most certainly not lost. We’ve done nothing to your hosting account and that’s where the content is. But the free mollypluschris.wordpress.com url will only work when the site was designed/hosted through WordPress.com.

I’ve contacted our registrar and am trying to mollypluschris.com back. This way you’ll have access to your mollypluschris.com/wp-admin login again. I know the domain had been close to expiring before, but I’ll handle that issue for now. :)

Un-cancelling a domain can take several days, but since we caught this early it’s likely we can get it back. Once we retrieve it, you can choose to Export the content from your .org hosting, and then Import it to your free mollypluschris.wordpress.com site.

Depending on your theme and setup on the .org site… the two may differ. WordPress.com does have some restrictions that self-hosted sites do not have.

I’ll let you know when I hear back from the registrar regarding access to that domain.

    Best,

    -Alex G.

    Hello there!

I was able to get the domain reactivated. :)

The next step is to your point your domain’s custom DNS back to your hosting service, that way you can access your self-hosted /wp-admin/. You mentioned two hosting services below: DreamHost and LightningBase.

I went ahead and adjusted the name servers to DreamHost’s specifications. If this doesn’t work in the next couple days, or if you know it was setup to LIghtningBase, and we can switch them out and try LightningBase. :)

You can read about how to adjust name servers here:

Doesn’t look like the site is back up and running… I’m seeing the content, but it’s not in a template. Does that mean everything is working and I just need to choose a new template, or is it not transferred?

Thank you for all of your help with this!

    Hi there,

I also don’t see your site up and running. I had set your name servers to Dreamhost. I’ve changed them to point to Lightningbase (since that’s the other hosting service you mentioned) to see if that works.

Were you able to look back at emails or any other records to see what you were pointing the domain to?

It sounds like you again have access to mollypluschris.com/wp-admin/ is this correct?

If so, I’d go ahead and follow the export/import steps for this process so we can get your site running on the free version of WordPress.com:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-from-wordpress-org

This is the really important step, because if you don’t want to renew the domain this is your free option. If you have access to the /wp-admin/ dashboard you can still complete this even while the domain’s name servers are getting sorted out.

    Best,

    -Alex G.
