Revise Deleting Blog Process

  • Unknown's avatar

    We have a study stream of people that have deleted a blog in error. The reasons vary from, I did a spelling error, my cousin did it for spite, my now ex. deleted my blog on the way out the door, and the list goes on.

    My suggestion has been suggested a bit in the forum by others to have a 30 day cooling off period.

    My expansion on that idea.

    Once a blog is “deleted” and all the email’s have been clicked on, the following happens

    1) visiting a blog will show a box like the current Private blog does, but the wording is changed with lots of red etc with a note that “this blog has been marked for deletion in 30 days (use a count down to zero counter), if you are the blog owner and did not intend to do this, please log in and un-delete the blog. Require a second log-in for the account owner, even if they are currently logged in.

    2) if the owner tries to access the Dashboard of the deleted blog, restrict access and send them to the above box.

    3) ?? – maybe send an email to each Admin / Editor etc. informing them of the scheduled deletion.

    4) ?? – maybe a weekly email informing the owner of the deletion countdown (might not be popular) – no extra click required for deleting, but a link to the above Delete log-in box if someone changes their mind.

    This would give sort of a no fault undo – and yes someone will argue for 31 days or unlimited, but this would get the content back easily.

    OK – thoughts?

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    I think a 21 day period is enough. Maybe a link where the user can also download his blog within 15 days, to insure if he ever wants it again, he can use the material. I agree with point 3) and 4) .

    In exchange for help, can you help me with….

    Thanks and have a good one!

    I think this is a good idea. When I used to blog at Blogger, they gave 90 days which seemed overly long when I wanted it gone, but 30 is reasonable. This surely would be enough time for most who come here quite upset that somehow their blog is deleted.

    We are not on the same page, I disagree. There are multiple warnings given that blog deletion is irreversible and that deleted blog URLs are not recycled. There is a recommendation that there be only 1 Admin per blog. What we experience here is (1) people who fail to read (2) people who fail to comprehend what they read and/or (3) people who ignore what they read.

    @TT

    I agree with you on the above – I just have a different suggestion to the current process. Yes there are several warnings and people do not heed them

    Sorry I had a phone call and had to click submit too soon.

    As it is now the policy is clear as it meets the KISS principle.

    If you delete a blog then the URL is gone forever. It cannot be recycled and reused, regardless of who registered the URL and who deleted it.

    There is no number of complex contingency plans like the ones you suggest that can be any simpler that what stands now.

    There is no number of complex contingency plans like the ones you suggest that will change the behavior of those people
    (1) who fail to read the support docs and multiple warnings;
    (2) who fail to comprehend what they read;
    (3) who ignore what they read.

    The more contingency plans there are the more opportunities there will be for people to complain that they did not understand what they were doing.

    That is why I strongly disagree with your suggestion(s).

    Yes there are several warnings and people do not heed them

    The policy cannot be made more simple than it is now.
    This is a blogging platform
    Bloggers are writers.
    Writers are readers.

    Those people (1) who fail to read the support docs and multiple warnings; (2) who fail to comprehend what they read; (3) who ignore what they read may be best served by learning how to read.

    All true – then there are the ones that have their email account compromised or the phone rings, something happens in the Kitchen, steps away from the PC at work.

    There have also been people trying to get rid of one of two blogs that have almost the same spelling and they miss the one or two character difference and don’t read the letters correctly, you as someone with vision issues would understand missing a character in a name.

    I miss characters from time to time and we both have helped people with blog name issues where the difference was only one or two characters, I have needed to put both names exactly above and below each other many times to find the name differences.

    We have a basic disagreement on this issue, I will let others pitch in – part of my reason for the thread is to get the staff to put it on their great list of things to think about.

    I say keep the stated policy in place. Site deleted, gone forever.

    I also say let Staff put a deleted site in stasis for 30 days, so that when startled and upset site owner comes along to the forums or contacts Support directly and asks for help in retrieving their deleted site, Staff can use their discretion whether the circumstances warrant engineering some happiness or not.

    Also, I am still very much in favor of removing site deletion from the hands of any Admins added after a site is created and leaving that function solely in the hands of the site owner.

    As most folks reading this may not know we are friends who are capable of disagreeing without becoming disagreeable I’m putting that out here.

    @justjennifer
    FWIW I’m with you on all three points you made.

  • Unknown's avatar

    @TT – we just have a wide difference of opinion on this one – stuff happens and I would like to not see people pleading with the staff or crying over the last 4 years or whatever of their memories that got lost –

    Keyboards at 20 paces?? :)

    take care

  • Hi all – Thanks for the feedback and suggestions. We’ll consider this. :)

  • Unknown's avatar

    @auxclass

    Keyboards at 20 paces?? :)

    Hilarious! As you know I am cursed with this blasted keyboard that does not speak language I do I won’t be taking up the duel. ;)

  • Unknown's avatar

    @eurello – thanks

    Just want to make your job easier

    Also there is some sort of hole in the delete process that allows non blog owners to delete a blog. There is a confirming email that should only go to the blog owner of record to confirm the delete, but on a regular basis we have people that have had blogs deleted by a non owner Admin.

    This would give the owner a path to recovery without crying and begging for divine intervention by the staff.

    @TT – good luck with the keyboard, :) – others would call your new keyboards “progress” :)

  • @captnmike Any admin can delete a blog; that’s why we advise people not to have more than one admin:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator

  • Unknown's avatar

    @eurello, perhaps you noticed my suggestion above,

    Also, I am still very much in favor of removing site deletion from the hands of any Admins added after a site is created and leaving that function solely in the hands of the site owner.

    There may be entirely legitimate reasons why someone might add another admin to a website.

  • Unknown's avatar

    @eurello – yes any Admin has access to the Tools >> Delete function – but one of the steps should be an email with a link in it that goes to I thought the blog owner – so how does a non owner get around the email check?

    We have people show up in the forum on a regular basis that can’t delete a site because they did not get an email – but others show up and the site was deleted by someone that seems to me should not have access to the email of the blog owner –

    The email check for delete that seems to be able to be gotten around is the part that is confusing me – sort of like the reset password email – if the link is not clicked on the password is not reset –

    I am aware that the procedure to delete a blog is clear. I am, however, also aware that there are lot of really, really stupid people and also many malicious people in the world who get into the accounts of other people.

    I agree with the thirty day pause period simply on the basis that it will make OUR lives simpler. We will have fewer hysterical, stupid people to deal with.

    Let the Delete button set the blog to Private for 30 days and then another AGREE TO PERMANENTLY AND IRREVERSIBLY DELETE THIS BLOG, ITS URL, AND ALL ITS CONTENTS email sent to the blogger at that time.

  • Unknown's avatar

    @raincoaster
    I agree with your take on the non-readers but no I still don’t stand onside for a 30 day freeze. That will simply delay the SHOUTING! and carrying on. I notice when I post my all inclusive copy and paste they accept it, and move on. When they get the simple one liner they continue with the histrionics.
