Revised project disappears from portfolio page

  • Unknown's avatar

Can someone explain what’s happening—or not happening—when I revise a project page and it suddenly disappears from a portfolio? The project is a book cover, and the portfolio is of all the book cover projects.

(And secondly, as I prefer the new layout of the one project, it would be wonderful if I could change it in one action for all the others. I imagine this isn’t possbile, though, or at least not with the setup as I have it.)

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Hi,

Can someone explain what’s happening—or not happening—when I revise a project page and it suddenly disappears from a portfolio? The project is a book cover, and the portfolio is of all the book cover projects.

The project is present in the portfolio. So I would say “not happening.” Do you still not find the project in the portfolio?

(And secondly, as I prefer the new layout of the one project, it would be wonderful if I could change it in one action for all the others. I imagine this isn’t possbile, though, or at least not with the setup as I have it.)

The layout looks the same to me in each of the several projects that I visited. However, I noticed two minor differences in the “Empire of Guns” project page: 1. The image is smaller than that in each of the others that I visited, and 2. There is text to the right of the image, whereas the others had no text.

The minor difference—the smaller image and the double column—is the only one I want for the moment. It would be nice to make that change in the other few image pages without having to work them individually, is this possible?

When I look at the Book Covers portfolio page, “Empire of Guns” is missing. This happened right after I changed the project layout. Does it appear to you? I’m trying to figure out whether it’s a problem with my cache or something, but I don’t think it is. The only other thing I can think of that would cause it to disappear is for the “book cover” project type to have dropped, but it hasn’t.

I think you might have chosen a different format option for the “Empire of Guns” project. There’s no option at Customize — at least I’m not finding one — to universally set the format for all projects on the Sketch theme. Standard is the default format option, and the others are Aside, Image, Video, Quote, and Link. I suspect that changing the default setting to another format option would require CSS Customization.

Yes, I’m still seeing “Empire of Guns” in the Covers portfolio page.

I’ll call for staff attention regarding these two issues. Staff will respond here.

    I’ve found a partial solution.

The default post format setting also applies to the default project format on Sketch. However, it only applies to new posts and projects, respectively, and not to previously created posts and projects, whether published or not. So it looks like you’ll have to change the format on previously created projects individually.

The Default Post Format setting may be found at My Sites → Settings → Writing → Composing → Default Post Format.

See the Writing Settings support page. How to change the default post format setting is described and illustrated in the Default Post Format section of the support page.

Note that the universal setting applies to future posts as well as to portfolio projects.

Thanks so much for your continued support, musicdoc1. If I ever get the hang of all this, I hope I can be as much a help to someone else.

  • Hi, I can see the cover here where I would expect it:
    https://robehle.com/project-type/book-cover-design/

You’ve got a little gallery code on the /covers page that could be throwing things off a bit. Would you mind removing that?

  • Also I do think @musicdoc1 could be correct in that you’ve somehow managed to select “image” as a type for that project, when it should be standard. If you’d like, we can try to update that on our end to see if it help.

  • Unknown's avatar

If I knew how to remove the code, I absolutely would. And feel free to update the project type to standard. Again, I can’t see where I can change that now, though I do remember selecting “image” as the project type earlier.

I’ve been messing with the individual book cover projects for the last half hour. And have seen that instead of selecting two columns, I can simply set the block as “image + text,” which I’ve done for a couple projects. I do not see, though, where I can set the image size exactly, which I have to do if I want the projects to be consistent.

Would also like, someday, for the gallery to display the book cover thumbnails uncropped. Looks like I can’t do this without CSS?

  • I’ve updated the project and that didn’t help.

But I suspect now I see something that will. Can you try changing the number here from 10 per page to another number?

Your theme lets you set an aspect ratio of square, 1:1, or 3:4, or 4:3. So if you’d like, you could upload your images with a background so they fit those sizes.

    @supernovia,

Also I do think @musicdoc1 could be correct in that you’ve somehow managed to select “image” as a type for that project, when it should be standard.

You are referring to the format applied to the “Empire of the Guns” project, aren’t you? But he has indicated that he prefers that format. In the OP he said:

(And secondly, as I prefer the new layout of the one project, it would be wonderful if I could change it in one action for all the others. I imagine this isn’t possbile, though, or at least not with the setup as I have it.)

And then confirmed that preference in the his second post, saying:

The minor difference—the smaller image and the double column—is the only one I want for the moment. It would be nice to make that change in the other few image pages without having to work them individually, is this possible?

    @robehle
    ,

And feel free to update the project type to standard.

Perhaps I’m confused, but I think it’s the “Image” format that you’ve said you preferred, and wanted to apply to all of the projects, not the “Standard” format.

However…I hadn’t done any testing of the effect of project formats upon the appearance of embedded images (size and position) and the layout of a projects on the Sketch theme until just moments ago.

The results of my tests are the following:

    1. The size and position of an image embedded in a project on the Sketch theme is unaffected by changing the format. I noticed absolutely no effect at all upon image location and dimensions an image embedded in a project on Sketch, for any of the six optional formats.

    2. I was able to approximately duplicate your “Empire of the Guns” project by inserting the file image, which I’d saved and uploaded to my media library, setting the dimensions to width="342" height="514" , copying and pasting the text below the image, and then left aligning the image. I also added the title and the project type. The only difference between my test project and yours when viewed on my desktop monitor is that yours has greater space between the text and the image. I suspect that perhaps you’ve used some code to create the extra space; or maybe you used a different editor that allowed you to produce that effect. I’m using the old WP-Admin editor.

I’m so new to working with this platform for anything other than blog posting that I’m not sure I know what I want.

And if there was any code used to create extra space between image and text, I didn’t manually or purposely add it.

As I have a day job and am squeezing my website work in around the edges, my correspondence here may be spotty, but I’ll try to read through all the comments of the last 12 hours and see what I can make of them. In the meantime, I really appreciate all the attention you’ve given to this and the help.

    Done.

  • Thanks @robhle. And sorry for pushing you through all of these technical hoops.

Can I recommend making all projects use the same format, or at least all projects of the same type (such as cover)? It doesn’t seem to make a difference in this theme anyway, and it helps make troubleshooting weird issues like this a bit easier.

I think I’ve finally figured out part of the issue: the theme shows 10 projects per page by default. So it’s paginating on the 11th project. It should probably cut off at 6, 9, or 12 for better layout. I’ve filed a request on that.

You *should* have a link for loading older projects, though. I’m kinda surprised it’s not there in your case. We’ll keep working on it and will update you here.

    @musicdoc1
I hadn’t read the entire thread, to be honest… just the parts that looked like they were modlooked. Sorry I missed all that. If you want to chat more about this, would you want to start a new thread? Just to avoid overwhelming @robehle in the meantime?

  • Unknown's avatar

Definitely plan on eventually using the same layout for all projects of the same project type. At the moment, I’m just futzing to figure out which works best. And futzing on different projects. Which is probably bad.

I thought I’d changed the design portfolio to go to nine images, but it doesn’t appear to have taken.

And yes, this thread has become a maze. I’ll start a new one with any further questions.

  • I thought I’d changed the design portfolio to go to nine images, but it doesn’t appear to have taken.

Yeah this seems to be a bug. I don’t know if you’re supposed to be able to specify the number of portfolio items per page view, but it should be a number that looks nice, and you should also get an “olde projects” link near the bottom so you can navigate to other work.

  • Ah, I do see a link now. It says Previous. When I click it, look what I find:

    Covers

Checking to see if we can get a more graceful break at 6, 9, or 12.

  • Unknown's avatar

That’s an old iteration, and it bothers me that there would be a link to it for anyone but the owner of the site.

I’m doing all of this fiddling around with most of the site publicly viewable, which I should probably change. For the moment, my site gets zero traffic, but once people start looking at it, it shouldn’t be unstable, changing from hour to hour in its looks or the way it works.
