Revising & re-posting previous entry – best way?
-
I have a seasonal post from last year I’m in the process of revising slightly. I’d like to repost it, with the same title. What’s the best way to do it, so folks who are searching with keywords will be directed to this year’s “version”?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I would definitely NOT change the date as that will change the URL and it will cause a broken link at the search engines.
My suggestion would be to edit the content as required, and then make it a sticky post so that it appears at the top of the main page.
Alternately you could write a new post with a short introduction and link to the older post in the body of the new post.

I have to tell you that’s a terrible idea, particularly using the same title. The only way this would be a good idea was if the post were changed substantially, like it’s a questionnaire and all the answers are different. I have a tradition of reposting The Christmas Story every year at Christmas, but what I do is make a short post directing people to the original one. That way hits for those keywords are ALL directed to the original post, and it becomes more important year by year.
Otherwise, obviously, you risk seach engines seeing duplicated material and downgrading you.

Got it! I knew there were problems, but I couldn’t quite get my mind around what they were.
Thanks, all.

You can see how I’ve done it here:

@raincoaster ~ Thanks! not only for a couple of great examples of how to do it, but for reminding me of the story again. I remember reading it – probably in 2008 – and I just enjoyed it again. It is great. Merry Christmas!
