Rich ! – AT LAST you're back …

    I hope Utah was not only stunning to look at, but provided an assembly in which you learned a shitload of new stuff. Because, of course, it will all help me ! [grin]
    Business: Blog Simple.
    I can’t see my tag under the site-title.
    What am I doing wrong, please ?
    Note: I’m currently reinstalling my original site within this theme: will it make it difficult for you to check stuff if I’m farting around in there …?

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Well, that is strange. There is a display none in the original CSS. Add the following to override that.

    .site-description {
        display: block;
    }

    Utah was good, and I did learn some stuff and that is good too. Got to hang out with everyone and talk and discuss things and plot the takeover of the web. :)

    Most times no problem as long as you are farting around with something you want me to work on, but then again you never know.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Tenks dullink – poifick !

    Just let me know when the coup’s about to happen, and I’ll foller yer. Whither thou goest and all that. [grin]

  • Unknown's avatar

    I’ll do that and you are welcome.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hold the phone …! – have just discovered you don’t get away that easily …
    I set that tag as

    .site-description {
    	display: block;
    	font-size: 40px;
    	font-weight: 300;
    	font-style: italic;
    }

    but I can’t stop it from turning out to be heavier than 300. (Specifically what, I dunno.)

    Can’t work out for the life of me how to restrict it to 300 font-weight …

  • Unknown's avatar

    Add the !important attribute to font-weight so it looks like this:
    font-weight: 300 !important;

  • Unknown's avatar
    .top-page .site-description {
    	display: block;
    	font-size: 40px;
    	font-weight: 300 !important;
    	font-style: italic;
    }

    http://snag.gy/xGQFw.jpg
    I.e., no change …

  • Unknown's avatar

    It works if it’s not italicised, strange.

    I have noticed that when the page loads the js console reports a 403 error on a requests for:

    http://use.typekit.net/c/0c902c/open-sans-1:i4:i7:n3:n4:n7.VvD:P:2,Vv9:P:2,VvF:P:2,VvH:P:2,Vv8:P:2/d?3bb2a6e53c9684ffdc9a9bf5195b2a620ddcd3046f58c4dc110107391973ca557f8d8a2ed8bec6f353c30fe28e4f50480f8196f82e17150a5849045ccd84f8b0a207bc88ebc913cb87d4ddc4f0a8c5dda69b92c083782945879ab77ae98707aabd2f737880f70ca4c860507c017778b972985ff253688816ec28067155082d8b86b6852499

    Although the Open Sans Light Italic WOFF URL in the default type CSS seems to be valid. One for the theme team to investigate perhaps?

    If you please, m’dear !
    AND ! …
    Where the devil have I gone wrong with the menu, please, Rich ?: the drop-downs show but can’t be linked to.
    Am I mad, in a coma, or back in time …? – none of those, just in the grasp of Alzheimer’s … :-(

  • Unknown's avatar

    Try reducing the distance of the sub-menu from the main navigation links so there’s no gap:

    .main-navigation ul ul {
      top:3.9em;
    }
  • Unknown's avatar

    Bloody smart-arse, you are, Rich Spees ! :-D
    How did you know that reducing the gap would help ? – doesn’t seem to be logical, to me … but then, what the **** would I know ?!
    Thank you, me old china.
    Don’t leave town !!!

  • Unknown's avatar

    I’m not Rich, but thanks for the comparison!

    I think modifying some of the other elements introduced the gap, and what happens is if there’s a space between the main link and the secondary menu, when your mouse moves over it (unless you’re really quick!) the menu collapses as it’s not triggering the hover state any more.

  • Unknown's avatar

    So you’ve still got his back, then, Luke ? – poor you. :-)
    OK: next problem …
    The setup in the sidebar: I can’t make

    .widget ul {
    	list-style: disc !important;
    }

    work. Can you advise what I should be using instead, please ?

  • Unknown's avatar

    On the font weight, I’m now remembering an issue where the customizer and browser views did not match on font weight in at least one other case (with Open Sans). The Typekit fonts have individual fonts for light, semi-bold, bold, etc. You can make them heavier than the font style that is loaded, but you cannot make them lighter in stroke. The Customizer was mistakenly showing a lighter font weight, but rightfully so, the browser was not.

    To see that the font weight in .top-page .site-description is actually effective, change it from 300 to 800 and then view your site in your browser.

    On the italic thing, again, the Open Sans Typekit fonts have italic versions, but you can’t apply that one to the site-title since it isn’t loaded. When you apply the italic font style through CSS to some fonts, font weight can sometimes be affected.

    I’m hoping that I’ve managed to completely confused you now. :)

    Short answer, if you want the lighter font, remove the italic font style.

    On the list you were ever so close:

    .widget ul {
        list-style: disc inside;
    }
  • Unknown's avatar

    What if I use another font …?
    And there is NO SUCH THING as being ever so close in CSS – do not try to make me feel better ! [grin]
    I await further attention, as always … :-)

  • Unknown's avatar

    AND ! – the tag is missing again when you click to read a post.
    :-(

  • Unknown's avatar

    Btw, the code for the lists only works if you add the list item:

    .widget ul li {
    list-style: disc inside;
    }
  • Unknown's avatar

    AND ! – the tag is missing again when you click to read a post.
    :-(

    Fixed it meself. Hallelujah !

  • Unknown's avatar

    What if I use another font …?

    Forget all that. It’s just too hard.
    Have gone back to a tag that doesn’t require italics.
    Pfuh !
    :-)
