  I really want to know what I’ve done wrong; as I’ve been including images in my posts since October 2013, I am more than a little bemused ..

  Hmmm, it seems to occur on linked images left or right aligned, which do not have a caption. Add the following CSS and then check back through your posts and pages and make sure nothing has gone awry with this change.

  .entry-content a {
      display: inline;
  }

  I’m going to test this on my site and if I can reproduce on an un-customized site, I’ll file a bug report.

  For a while there I thought I must be going bonkers. Not that such a thing ain’t never happened, of course … [grin]
