Right Column Links Disappeared, Screwy Formatting

    Hi folks:

I am generally very happy with the blog services, but I’ve had some screwy formatting issues come up.

Most recently, all of the links on the right column of my home page (i.e. Archive, About, Tags, etc.) have all disappeared. I did not adjust the settings for these items, and it is perplexing to me why they all disappeared. Previously, I had another inexpicable event– I posted a new post, and the formatting changed on all my prior posts. What gives?!

Does anyone know how I can (1) get my right-column items to appear again; and (2) get rid of the “bug” (bad template, etc.?) or whatever it is that is making all these spontaneous changes to my blog? My blog is at http://www.employeerightswisconsin.com.

    Thanks!
    Mike

First off, it appears like you may be copying and pasting from other sources such as the web or MS Word or something. This will get you in trouble unless you use the “paste as plain text” or “paste from Word” icons in the extended toolbar in the visual editor. It brings in all sorts of code that can mess things up. In your second post, open it for edit, copy everything out onto your clipboard, then delete everything in that post and then paste it back in using the “paste as plain text” button I mentioned (icon with the “T” on the white square.

You have a lot of open HTML tags in your main blog page which need to be closed. The other thing that can trip you up is the more tag. Always put it on its own line instead of at the end of a paragraph. Not doing this can sometimes split a div tag pair.

Check this validation report and work on anything that says, “end tag for “_____” omitted…”

One of the open tags – probably a div) – is responsible for the sidebar disappearing. Other themes just push the sidebar to the bottom of the screen with open tags, but with Black Letterhead, the sidebar just disappears.

Thank you very much for your response, and the helpful info you provided. I will try some of the fixes suggested, and use care when pasting text going forward.

    Thanks again!
