Right hand column disappeared
-
My right-hand column – with all my widgets – just disappeared! It was all nice and honky-dory this afternoon. What happened?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hmm, have you used any custom CSS recently? The content area appears to have been widened, forcing the sidebar to move down below it (if you keep scrolling until all of the posts are loaded, you will see it at the bottom of the page).
-
@majomajo: See this post of mine, esp. section A:
http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2012/05/19/sidebar-at-the-bottom-and-related-issues/@andrewcpht: When a user has added custom CSS, the footer credits turn to “Customized [Theme Name]”.

Andrew – I have been aware of what you are saying about the content area getting wider – and now I do see the sidebar down at the bottom of the page. But I don’t think I could have used and custom css – I don’t even know what that is. The one big change I made yesterday was to purchase a custom domain – without WordPress in the URL – and make that my primary domain. It doesn’t seem, to non-techie me, that this should have caused this problem.
Let me now look at what justpi has to say.
-
Justpi – Wow, that section you sent me to is so far over my head – I can’t begin to get my hands around it.
Do you think that changing my theme could help? I have no attachment to this Misty Lake theme. And I keep getting WP messages that the Misty Look theme I was using four years ago, the last time before a few days ago that i used this blog, has been changed to the new Misty Lake theme. Don’t know if that could be affecting any of this.
Might I need to pay a WP consultant to help me fix this?
-
No, this has nothing to do with the theme, it has to do with errors in your latest post.
And I don’t see why you find my section A “so far over your head”. Quoting from my post:
1) go to Settings > Writing: tick the option “WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically”, click Save Changes;
2) edit [your latest] post: switch the editor to HTML then back to Visual and click Update, or make any insignificant change (for instance add then remove a space) and click Update.Where’s the difficulty?
-
Thank you, thank you, thank you. That was very clear and even for me easy to follow. And it fixed everything! I am so grateful.
(The only one step in your instructions where I for just a moment had a little hiccup was “switch the editor to HTML then back to Visual”. I didn’t see anything identified as HTML and for a moment didn’t know what to do. But then I saw the one tab labeled Visual and – genius that I am – figured the Text tab must be the same as HTML.)
Thanks again. I am incredibly relieved and can now go about my day with a light heart. I am your humble servant.
-
You’re welcome!
The post was obviously written before WP renamed the editor, and I had neglected to update it; I’ll do that right away, so thanks for the pointer! -
justpi –
Thanks again, so much – my day has been completely different because I started it with this fixed.
Does “member” under your handle mean that you are not a WordPress staff member? If not, what motivates you to help us poor schlubs – and so expeditiously?

Yes, “member” means I’m a fellow blogger volunteering.
What motivates me? I like learning and organizing things, and I like sharing these things with others (guess it’s no coincidence that I’m a teacher by profession). Also, I enjoy experimenting, solving problems, and inventing workarounds (which is why I usually address ‘interesting’ questions only, i.e. problems the average user cannot solve). Also, the expected reasons why you would occupy yourself with any hobby. -
justpi –
Thanks for sharing all this: you are an inspiration and a delight and I continue to be very grateful to you. Be well and keep doing your wonderful work, for as long as it serves you!
