Right to left languages
-
How can I display right-to-left languages properly. I tried to upload a plugin but I get a message that says ‘want to add a store to your site?’
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You can go to this page and find the correct language setting and the expected r to l change will appear on the blog.
http://margohelman.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-general.php
Language this blog is primarily written in.
You can also modify the interface language in your profile. -
P.S. If what you are asking is not how to set your interface language but instead is how do I make my blog available in other languages read on.
We bloggers do not have FTP access to blogs hosted by WordPress.COM and we cannot install any plugins. We cannot use Microsoft or Google translation widgets or any others, as they are JavaScript and it’s stripped out to preserve security on this multiuser blogging platform. http://en.support.wordpress.com/code/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/code/#javascriptHowever, I have translation on my WordPress.com blogs. There are two workarounds and you will find them here > http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2011/02/14/translation-widget-for-wordpress-com-blogs/
Note: You can copy and paste the code on my Translations page http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/translation/ and then replace every occurrence of my blog’s URL in the code with your own blog’s URL.

I see that nearly the entire site you’ve linked to is in English except for your one page in Hebrew.
Are you expecting to write a single post using both languages? Are you looking to write one post in English and another in Hebrew?
Here are some tips for multilingual blogs https://en.support.wordpress.com/set-up-a-multilingual-blog/
and more the tips in other RTL tagged forum threads here: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/tags/rtl

Just so you know, we cannot upload/install 3rd party plugins on WordPress.com https://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/

Thanks for your ideas.
I’ll have some time to check them out tomorrow. For now I just want the one page in Hebrew. I had to omit punctuation at the end of each paragraph otherwise it showed up at the beginning of the line… And I made one of the paragraphs longer than I would have.
At some point I may decide to do the whole site in Hebrew as well as English.

Actually took some time now. First I clicked on the links you sent Jennifer.
I tried to add the rtl code on the html tab as it says in this conversation https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/punctuation-marks-in-hebrew-left-to-right-language?replies=13
Unlike for the poster, my problem also shows up on the blog. So, as in the post you quoted in that conversation on July 8 at 9:15 pm, now the code for the first line on my Hebrew page, on the html tab reads like this: <p dir=rtl> <p style=”text-align: right;”> And I put the period back at the end of the line. As you can see, it shows up at the beginning of the line…
I’ll get to try more suggestions later.
Thanks!

@tt of course. :)
I had to omit punctuation
Then for sure you’ll want to read this forum thread: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/punctuation-marks-in-hebrew-left-to-right-language
At some point I may decide to do the whole site in Hebrew as well as English.
Personally, I’d go for Option 3 in that Support doc I linked to on multilingual sites to make two entirely separate, interlinking blogs. When you have LTR and RTL languages, the user side interface is different on each and not always compatible with both.
-
Hello again, I neglected to refresh the page before posting my answer.
I’ll see if I can experiment a bit more later, but my first thought is that there is no benefit in having two P tags. The RTL tag should be enough.
Also, before you start writing in Hebrew, right click in the text entry area and change the text direction.
Lastly, there may be some incompatibility between the theme you’re using and RTL languages.
And if you are not already, I strongly suggest writing your posts in the Classic WP Editor interface. That’s the one in your site’s Dashboard and not the “New Dash”.
-
Thank you both! I decided to make a separate, much smaller site.
I’m wondering now, is there a way to make a little ע icon somewhere? -
-

LOL – mayo or mustard?
Actually, besides a link icon, if you decide to go with a separate mini-site, you can also link to it directly in your navigation menu using a Custom Menu and using a custom link. Make that custom link the last item in the Custom Menu on your English language site so that it is the furthest on the right. Here’s more on Custom Menus https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/2/ and more on custom links https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/2/#adding-custom-links
I’ve set up an example on my test site so you can see what it looks like. https://ablogdemo.wordpress.com/
Let us know if you need more help with that.

Thanks! This worked! The strange thing is, I succeeded in making a custom link and putting it on the navbar on the English site. But I couldn’t do this for the Hebrew site. I’m pretty sure I did exactly the same thing, but it’s not showing up on the navbar. It is listed in the menu when I go into Appearance > Menus… Do you know why it wouldn’t be showing on the navbar?
I haven’t looked at the second link you sent me yet, so maybe the answer is in there. -
That is odd. On the Hebrew site, you are using a Custom Menu and a Custom link to the English site, nachon?
-
I think I am. I’m definitely using a custom link. And it’s on the menu that I see when I go to appearances/menus… Is there something I need to do to make it a custom menu? Ah! Just figured it out. I checked the box for theme locations – primary menu. Now it works!
-
Ok. Since we’re doing so well :)
How come I can’t change the colour of the header text on the Hebrew site like I can on the English site?On both I go into appearance/header. On the English site I get the black dashboard menu running down the left side of the page and the main body of the page starts with preview (the image) and other image possibilities and ends with two options for Header Text: show text which is checked and text colour with a custom colour box.
On the Hebrew site I go into appearance/header and I get a completely different page, with Customizing Header Page and a box to choose a new image on the left of the page and the home page on the body of the page.
Help?
-
That is also odd.
It sounds like on your English site you have the old Dashboard link to customize the site header image and header text while on your Hebrew site you have the updated redirect link to the Customizer to change your header image (with no ability to change the header text color).
To the best of my knowledge, the Powers That Be dropped that old link a couple of months ago; there were whole threads about it here in the forums. Why or how you’ve got it in your English site Dashboard is a mystery to me. But use it while you still can, it’s going away. (You might be able to copy and add the part of the link from your English Dashboard after “themes.php” over to your Hebrew site and see what you get.) :)
