Ring Surf? Text Widgets? Email Buttons?
-
How can I add ring surf groups to my blog hosted on WordPress? I am learning as fast as I can but adding a text widget seems beyond me at this point so please explain everything slowly and carefully, LOL.
I’d also like to provide an email button to visitors to my group blog. How would I do that? -
(1) As you are new to wordpress the most important thing is to share the link that leads to all the links of the basic wordpress resources with you. I found it in the forum search box by typing in “wordpress resources” http://wordpress.com/forums/topic.php?id=5257&replies=16
(2) You have not provided the link to “surf ring” whatever it may be so we cannot answer you until you post it and we determine what code is used in it or in any other “buttons” you wish to post.
(3) The way most “buttons”, “badges” and “email addresses” are posted is in text widgets displayed in the sidebar. http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/10/18/put-an-image-in-your-sidebar/
And this may also help with the set up and configuring
of widgets.(4) WordPress is a multiuser blogging platform and as we are in a shared environment some embeds, forms, flash, and all javascript etc. cannot be used here and will be stripped by the wordpress program to maintain security. This is why (2) is important. :)
http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/05/07/javascript-can-i-use-that-on-my-blog/
This explains why javascript is stripped. Will you please provide links to all the buttons and badges you would like to post so we can answer your questions?

___________________________I really don’t know where to find a link to send you and I’m afraid that WP will strip most of the above code…
My Old Blogger has the two rings on it at http://thestitchery.blogspot.com One is in the left had list and one is located at the bottom.
Thanks for all the info. Some is new to me. I would never have thought to search for “resources”! So, thanks again!

ok, actually it is verry simpel:
start with the adres that the images directs to:
<*a href=”put here the destination or mail-adres”><*img src=”put here the adress of your picture”>
This is all you need to do. Almost the same as a hyperlink, only with a picture instead of text. (note, you have to delete the *’s first). Put this code in a text widget.
For an example of buttons, feel free to check my blog (it is in dutch, but you get the idea of the buttons).
-
Ack!!! Yipee!!! I did it. I just copied and pasted the code from the Old Blogger template into a text widget, titled it “Rings” and clicked on the save button!! Whoopeee, oh shoot, if I can do it, it must be simple.
Ok now to figure out how to add a button for email.

Hi, the group wants a clickable email button. I have designed a button jpg and when I tried to use a text widget all the sidebar contents were replaced by the text widget. So I am trying to do this as a blogroll link and can’t get a proper link.
How do I add a text widget without removing all the sidebar contents?
or
How do I use the blogroll link to make a clickable link? -
When you say the entire contents of the sidebar were replaced by an clickable email button image I can’t feature why one would have to be that large.
The theme you chose displays links in the footer. This is how to insert an image into the Blogroll:
=>Blogroll => Add Link => click on the + plus sign on the blue Advanced button =>
Image Address: (enter the linked html image code here), assign a categoy and => “Add Link”The Blogroll is where you enter links. The Links widget once dragged and dropped into place will display them. They will be displayed alphabetically in accord with the Categories you assign to them. And this will help with the set up and configuring of widgets.

Hi, timethief: I am working for http://thesewingdivas.wordpress.com.
On this template when I drag a text widget into the sidebar, the text widget is the only thing that shows, everything else is gone. Indeed, the Default Sidebar box says: “Dragging widgets into this box will replace the usual sidebar with your customized sidebar.”
I can drag categories and archives back into the sidebar but I’m not sure how to get all the blogroll back into the sidebar (there isn’t a tab for the blogroll in the template)
OK so back to the blogroll adding a link: when I enter
Email me!
per drmike’s FAQ into the address line WP changes it to http://<ahref=mailto:t-s-d-6hotmail.com?Thisisfromyourblog</a>I have a real pretty button image but when it’s clicked nothing happens. The Fonts on this Template are too small to be hardly noticeable so that’s why I wanted to add a button.
Can anyone sort this out?

I’m not sure how to get all the blogroll back into the sidebar (there isn’t a tab for the blogroll in the template)
I don’t know what you mean by tag but here is how to find your Blogroll in any theme
=> Dashboard => look and see these:
* Dashboard * Write * Manage * Comments * Blogroll * Presentation * Users * Options * Upgrades
click on => Blogroll and then => Add Link
(now complete the fields and follow the instructions I gave you above to insert the linked image code) => Add Link when you’re done to save. Please read the troubleshooting section in the widgets article I pointed you to again and start over.

Hi Timethief: I am working for TheSewingDivas. Their theme is Rounded. Here’s the blog: http://thesewingdivas.wordpress.com
I am not working on my own blog, this is a group blog.
The group members want a clickable link for readers to send them email. You know, like a “email me” that when it is clicked it takes them to their email program and they can send an email to the group?
I was hoping to use a fancy button graphic as the clickable link because this theme is very difficult to read.
But I can’t get it to work.
I know I can enter all the code into a text widget but when I use a text widget all the rest of the sidebar is overridden by the text widget.
I can drag the “categories” and the “archives” back into the customized sidebar but I have no way to replace the blogroll as there isn’t a “blogroll” tab in this theme’s sidebar tabs that can be dragged into the customized sidebar.
-
Sorry I clicked on your username without thinking and got your other blog. The only thing different is that this theme Rounded does not have the links in the footer like Fadtastic does. All the instructions for how to insert a clickable image in a text widget still stand.
Let’s get someone else to take a turn at explaining. :) -
OK, is there any way to make this image: http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/9823/emailtsdtabac6.jpg
which I have entered into the links advanced image address
clickable so that drmike’s instructions for adding a clickable email link work?
when I enter
“Email me!-“
per drmike’s FAQ into the address line WP changes it to “http://”How should the address for the mail to instruction be written?
I have tried “mailto:t-s-d-6hotmail.com?Thisisfromyourblog” and it doesn’t work
-
Darn, I can’t even send the codes without WP changing them so you can see what I’m trying to do.
Beginning to think this is hopeless.
how do I write the “mail to” instructions in the first addres line? WP is changing drmike’s < a href = ” mailto : trash @ wordpress . com ? This is from your blog ” > Email me! < / a >
into this:http : // & lt ; a href = mail to : t-s-d-6hotmail . com ?Thisisfromyourblog< / a & gt;
WP is removing the “@” from the email addy, as well
-
On the off-chance some strange formatting is sneaking in there from copying, I’d suggest pasting the code you want to use into Notepad and then copying that and using it. Yesterday I noticed a bit of strangeness when pasting HTML as well, so try this and let me know if it works.
-
So, maybe that’s it. I’m still trying to find out what code I should be inserting, though
The blogroll links seems to want a url, not a “mail to” or a <a href kind of thing.
-
raincoaster: I typed in the code < a href = ” mailto: funky @ email account . com ” > < / a >
and WP changed it to this (again)
http: // < ; a href = mailto: t-s-d-6 hotmail . com & gt ; & lt; /a >So copying and pasting isn’t the problem
-
I have changed tactics. Rather than trying to do this through the blogroll links, I customized the sidebar.
I finally figured out that the sidebar widget named “Links” was the blogroll links and so I could create my email link (without the button since that the graphic, when clicked, did nothing) at the top of the sidebar and add back everything that I wanted.
So all is solved. Whew
Oh it’s so simple when it works… :O
